Filling knot holes in floor

Hi,
i'm getting my floors polished in the next few weeks and have noticed a few knot holes that go all the way through. They are about 10-15mm wide. What is the process to fill these in. Do l have to get under the floor and glue an old bit of wood to act as a backing plate, then fill the hole with wood putty. Thats fine but the floor is pretty shallow in this part of the house and it's not an easy task to get under there. Is there another way? I'd imagine if l just filled the hole, the putty would fall through when being sanded or from being walked on.

If you are getting the floors done professionally perhaps discuss it with the company you're using. They will tell you their prefered method or do it for you. Often they use a cork or timber plug and finish off imperfections with epoxy.

]Sounds like you have a cypress floor, A kool way of filling those knots is to use a hard setting epoxy filler like builders bog. I would go a get some black oxide powder from the hardware store and tint the mix down, Then i would add the catalist to small portions to the mix and then slowly build across the hole untill totally bridged and filled. You could stuff some sort of a backing rod in the hole first to support the mix untill it hardens. When 6the sander comes along, he will sand it all flat , and whammmo you wont tell which is the real deal and which is knot.:)http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/images/icons/icon14.gif

Thanks for your responses. I was planning on polishing the floors myself but now l think i'm gonna go with a pro. I think the floors are cypress pine and was maybe thinking of getting the floors ever so slightly stained in order to tone down the yellow colour of cypress. If l end up doing this i'm definately going to get a pro in. As for the knot holes l think i'll ask them when i'm getting a quote done and take it from there but using a plug and epoxy or builders bog sounds the way to go. Thanks.
