Extension Cord / Computer

Giday all.

Was wondering if it is safe to use an extension cord (approx 5m) to run a computer and monitor. Nil other 'gadgets attched.

Yeah no problem at all- it doesn't draw that much power. Computers at work are often on extension cords because the wall plugs are too far from the desk, and we have had no issues with it. Given that is near 200 computers in that situation, and say 5 years of doing this, there is 1000 years of experience that it isn't a problem!

Thanx for any info.Curious question Mick. At work we're in an open plan office with 1.2m high partitions. Power is delivered to each desk via an extension lead burried in the partition walls, and plugged into a standard 10A wall outlet.

But you asked is it "safe" ?
So will the cord be a trip hazard?
If disconnected what will happen to the computer?
do you have a surge arrester?

Thanx for the quick replies.

Household power point in my boys bedroom. Moving furniture etc and found that the desk is too far from the point. Have intentions running the cord close to the skirting board. (short distance.) And yes, a surge protector.

I would also suggest if connected to the internet (via phone line) install a surge protector in the phone line. I neglected doing this and a nearby lightning jolt came through the phone line and cooked computer, printer, monitor, fax machine, everything!
