Weatherboard painting

My late 50,s weather board house is going to need a repaint in the next few months.After inspecting the boards the subsequent coats of paint previously applied have left an uneven build up that shows as hi and low spots.
Does anyone know the right way to finish the boards.That is, if the board is structurally sound is it just a matter of sanding the surface smooth?

IF you want to reduce the hi's and low's one way is to hire/beg/borrow/steal a heat gun and remove all the old layers of paint, but beware, being 50 years plus of age some of the lower coats may contain lead as a base.

therefore use of the appropriate safety apparell is advised.

after removal, recoat with a suitable primer/sealer.

I did say the house was built in the late 50,s so to put a fine point on it, 1958 to be exact.

Round here ther are a number of "we sand you paint" type sanding contractors.

In house painting the sanding is the nasty bit.
