I have a redgum table that I want to put a finish on. I went to Nicholas Dattner a few weeks ago and liked the semi/hi gloss he uses.. Does anyone know what sort of finish he uses and how it is applied?

Hi Macka75 and welcome. Seems the silence has been deafening!

I have a very soft spot for redgum and don't like to see it mistreated. So what I say below is my own feeling and is not meant to be derogatory to anyone or thing.

I would suggest using an oil as the sealing agent followed by something like Traditional wax as a shine enhancer. (see my post under pics, "fiddleback table".

If you must plasticize it, use something like Wipe on Poly to give added shine.

If you really need it to look like Dattner's work take it down to them and they'll probably finish it for you...completely.

Regards

Rob

Yowch! I have to agree though, but have you seen what Dattner charges for his pieces - even if they do sometimes look like plastic. I guess the market influences that.

You could use hard Shellac made by the sponser of this forum
