What the story with safety glass law these days. I have a window that starts at the floor and goes to the ceiling and I told my builder I only want it as glass instead and he said it would have to be safety glass which is more expensive.

I thought they would have allowed for safety glass anyway?? In fact I though in new extensions or houses all the glass would be safety glass?

cheers

Not all, only the ones that have to be according to the standard. If it goes floor to ceiling, it will definately have to be safety glass.

Previously it was a window from ceiling to floor that could be opened so it was split in the midddle by a window bar but now its just glass from ceiling to floor. Thats where I was getting confused because I would have though the window would have also required saftey glass. Would that have required safety glass because if it did I'll tell the builder the window needed it so I shouldnt have to pay extra.

The window would only have required safety glass if it was larger than a specified size or was next to a door or adjacent to a bath (there are heaps of other rules). Because it had a chair rail, it wouldn't have needed it. As soon as you go full glass from floor to ceiling, there is a danger of someone walking through it and so the requirement for safety glass.

Sounds like you are changing the original requirements? He would have quoted on a window with standard glass and so he is probably within his rights to charge more now that you want full glass. It costs considerably more - used to be about double when I was in the glazing biz. Not sure now but definitely more expensive.

Ok. Thank for your help SilentC. Yes I changed the specification because I thought the full glass looks better...now Im thinking I might not change? I have asked for a quote and will see what to do from there.

Even if I go for the window option I might put some film over it to make it more safer....a relative of mine walked through a glass door and is lucky to be alive so I need to make it safe especially for when i have kids.

If you keep changing specs the builders time must increase so your price might blow out.

Echidna...the builder seems ok to for me to change the spec....to be honest I think I am annoying the crap out them....
