12V lighting and roof insulation

I have loads of halogen lighting through out my house which looks great. The problem is the house is very cold during the winter due to the lack of insulation around the lighting as you cannot insulate within certain area of the light fitting and transformer.

What is the best way of insulating around these light fittings without causing a fire hazard?

Firstly try mounting the transformer on a ceiling rafter up and out of the insulation material. Most transformers have 2 screw holes in the body.

Next find the specifications for the lamp fitting to determine the clearance around the fitting. For example assuming a fitting of 40mm in width with a clearance of 50mm will give a circular clearing of 140mm. Now get a ceramic pot with 150mm wide inside diameter and place centrally over the fitting.

Ensure that the pot has a very large hole in the base or increase the hole size as necessary. You may need to make the hole size the same as the pot base. Now hot glue some flyscreen mesh to the pot base to keep the bugs out. Now you can insulate right up the the pot.

Wot Mark said, but you might want to glue the pot down with a bit of silicone or similar once you/ve got the right position, just to ensure you don't move it when installing the insulation.
