Sealing new plasterboard

G'day,

Plaster is up and ready to be sealed/primed in the reno. I now have a whole house to paint inside and out.....yay :(

Question for the painters out there - how should I prepare the new plasterboard for top coat:

1. Use plasterboard sealer annd then a primer
2. Use one of the acrylic 3 in 1 type paints

G'day Ben. Unless things have changed the way I did it on our new home several years ago was to seal the gyprock with sealer then 2 top coats with acrylic low sheen on the walls, flat on the ceiling.

I can remember a paint store employee at the time telling me of people with newly built homes coming in complaining their paint was 'powdering' on the walls due to the dry plaster sheet sucking the guts (water) out of the paint because no sealer was used.

According to the Building Services Authority in Queensland:

Paint finish is required to fulfil three
major functions.
1. Provide a decorative finish for
the homeowner.
2. Provide an acceptable washable
finish for the consumer.
3. Mask the unevenness of the
plasterboard and the variations
between plaster joints and
paper-faced wall boards,
especially in areas of glancing
light


A three coat system is recommended but, where a two -
coat system is to be used, it must be
supported by a paint manufacturer’s
specification and warranty. Where
a contractor is unable to provide a
specification, a three coat system is
required.

p.s. a lot of people point blame towards plasterers without taking consideration of point three above

Excellent - looks like the 3 coat system is the go. More painting for me....Yipppppeee!

Hi Ben, A painter friend of mine advised a cheap paint such as evencover professional diluted 20% with water as a sealer and then two low sheen topcoats, I think three is the way to go for a new place.
