i)
How do you calculate the S.W.L of wire cable under australian rigging construction law?

ii)
If the wire cable above is deemed to be used for the carriage of humans (Or chimps) what is the G.B.S multiplier ?

iii)
If the cable above is 10mm, what are the S.W.L. & G.B.S. ????

Hasn't beaurocracy come a long way?

Last time I laid a cable, the only thing I had to decide was whether to scrunch or fold.

P (Is that the sort of thing you were getting at Zeddie?)

OK - so that means we're talking about everything overhead on the good ship Very Little Gravitas Indeed, not what happens just for'ard of the taffrail, right?

I think you got the job. :D

It was actually a link to a picture in an old thread on this forum so if anyone would like to see it, let me know.

With interstinfg and iciteful questions like this, I can see this quiz going a long way.

I do like the fact the mods are deleting each other though.

Hey Cliff, wheres the pic?

no ones deleted anything in this thread except me deleting the pic if the wo-man with the big bazookas.

I cant beleive Ive got you all stumped.... where's the much vaunted "know anything" knowledge on his site eh ?? :D

Hopefully a lot more than over here in Boston MA, where the cables holding the concrete slabs up in the Boston Tunnel gave way (http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/07/11/bigdigdeath.ap/index.html)

Zed,

I think you have created a conundrum for us:

1) The question relates to the erection of rigging, usually the domain of the Dogman.

2) The only Dog-man we have is Grunt.

3) Grunt by his own admission, since his marriage at least, has not been involved in any work requiring erection.

THEREFORE

The skills required for calculation of S.W.L. of cable are now rare and endangered, and it may not be possible to obtain an answer for the question.

You had better make that 2 reds 'cos I can't even google it.
The dumb @rse way they do things here in Oz is such that they pass a law that says 'you will do it to this standard' & then they make you buy the bloody standard.

Can't help ya. :D

Nope, told a lie, I have found something here....
http://www.citb.org.au/cso/rigging/guide/gde005.htm
& here.
http://www.citb.org.au/cso/dogging/table/table004.htm

Still can't find anything about G.B.S.

Thanks Cliff
Formula: SWL (kg) = D2 (mm) x 8

So, when was the last time you saw a Doggie doing the mental arithmatic with a load, or for that matter weighing anything? (Yeah yeah, I know about load cells! ;) )

Hmmm, I'm trying to think of the last time I met a doggie who was capable of understanding any formula other than 24 x cans = 1 Slab.

I know I'm doing a great disservice to the noble crane drivers and dogmen of this great country, but really.... what happened to "she'll be right!"

It went out when dogmen stopped "riding the hook". Remember that?

Bloody Ocupational Health and Safety. :(

i)
How do you calculate the S.W.L of wire cable under australian rigging construction law?

Safe Working Load (SWL) in kg = (Diameter in mm x Diameter in mm) x 8

ii)
If the wire cable above is deemed to be used for the carriage of humans (Or chimps) what is the G.B.S multiplier ?

Guaranteed breaking strain (GBS) safety multiplier where cable is used for cairraige of humans = 10

iii)
If the cable above is 10mm, what are the S.W.L. & G.B.S. ????

SWL = (10x10)x8 = 800kg

GBS = 800kg x 10 = 8000kg (8 tmetric tonnes)

inanswer toyu your question midge - the rigger on site (not the dogman) is responsible for the safety of the job. they usually OVERSPECIFY a load when calc'ing the cable size thus the literally dont need to do mental arithmatic - Eg a 50 tonne crane usually has 24mm cable ((24x24)x8 x10) = 46 tonnes!!!! when you multiply the added mechanical advantage of a block and takle arrangement with say 5 runs of cable around the pullys you multiply it by a further 5 cables (A whopping 230 tonnes!!!!)... thats the REAL reason they dont do maths!!!!! OVER engineering!

Yeah but what happens to that massive 43 tonnes when you put a 2 tonne sling on the hook, and then wrap it around the load.

The overall SWL is the lowest SWL of any equipment used.

Cheers, Jack.

Skew ChiDAMN!!

BZZZT. Wrong. 23 cans = 1 slab. Don't forget, the TA ya send down the pub always taxes it... [sigh]

Oddly enough, during my time as a 'dozer driver with the SEC I ended up being ticketed as a doggy, a 'chaser and a rigger. (Stoopid multi-skilling! ) Now I can't remember a single damned formula... but I can still splice a mean monkey's-fist. Go figure! :D
