Hi all

I have a project to make some portable small chook pens. I was looking at using DWV PVC pipe. I need to find a supplier of fittings, preferably in Aus, to build the PVC frame. Obviously plumbing shops can provide T's and elbows, but I will need 4 way fittings (and possibly some 5 ways).

Can anyone help, or does anyone have any other ideas. My reasoning for going with PVC was that it is cheap and light.

Thanks,
Tony

Mate check out CAPRAL Cube lock aluminium , I am sure this is what you need , light strong and plastic connectors for every possable corner , Have used it to make cages, shelves, Storage racks, boxes etc
Know a bloke who makes and sells bird averies from this stuff
Its 1" hollow square section Al , cuts easily and works.

I have no reason to suggest this other than I have used it and it works and sounds like what you need

6 meters was around $22 and the fittings under $1 each

Thanks Ashore.

That looks pretty good. Do you use any glue on the fittings?

Depending on how much you need or how far away the Capral supplier is - I have had some success with a local poly-tube chair / dog bed / furniture maker. He sold me the bits but must admit they were not cheap. As to the use of glue - most of the poly-tube stuff is force fitted and then has a PK screw through both bits. At least you can repair / shift etc if you need to - if it's glued then you might have to throw it instead of being able to repair it.
Just a thought,
Bob

Thanks Bob

I've been trying to find some poly-tube furniture/dog-bed manufacturers who sell the connections but haven't yet found any. Who do you deal with?

Cheers,
Tony

We have a local bloke up here who does the markets selling dog beds mainly today [from memory goes under the name of Mrs Mac's worm farm]
We also used to have a chair maker down near Hervey bay but I think he has either gone to Bundaberg or gone broke.
I see you are in Bne - possibly one of the outdoor furniture places [which appear like mushrooms in Bne] could help you out.

What diameter PVC pipe do you intend to use?

Hi Kayep

Was thinking of 1 inch or 1.5 inch. Do you have any suggestions?

Tony

If you can manage with 25mm pipe, then you should have a look at plastic electrical conduit fittings

I have attached a photo that I found at www.app.net.au (http://www.app.net.au)

Phil here again.

I have found some more information, which should be useful if you need to use the larger diameter pipes.

Do you have any picture or plans of the chook pens, because I have been having thoughts along the same lines.

Check out this site: http://www.pvcplans.com/

I hadnt thought of electrical conduit fittings. Thanks for that.
I had checked out aquasonic, but from memory the prices were quite high. Thats why I was looking at DWV, cause its generally heaps cheaper than pressure pipe.

Actually one of my side projects is setting up an indoor aquaculture setup with a mate. Should be completed and filled this afternoon, all going well. Its only taken us about 2 years to get to this point, as we've designed and built everything ourselves. Lots of fun and lots of lessons learnt along the way (we didnt even know that pressure pipe existed when we started - hilarious when we look back on it).:D

Cheers,
Tony

A bit late to reply but you might try Hydroponic suppliers and Irrigation suppliers..... I had no probs getting 19mm & 25mm PVC pipe & fittings from Bunnings, Milperra.

Any pix yet of yr chook pen?:)
