I made a few items from old recycled Australian red cedar, but not happy with the finish

I used several coates of shelac and then wax.

Anybody have any ideas on a clear filler to fill the grain.

tried using a pinch of talcum with the shelac and rubbing in ,but it left whitish streaks

Use uBeaut's filler - see http://www.ubeaut.com.au/ubhome.htm or sanding sealer. I also suggest that you get hold of a copy of Neil's book - invaluable!

Shellac will fill the grain if you put eough coats on. If you're using a brush about six coats should do it. Putting it on with a pad (a handkerchief sized piece of white cotton singlet rag or similar folded about five times) is quicker.
Start with circles to fill the grain and finish along the grain. It's fast, surprisingly easy and satisfying.
