What can I say?

In my best Brooklynese,

"Youse guys was robbed!"

Any place else on the field that wouldn't have been called 'PLAY ON!'

The 2006 World Cup is going to go down as the worst officiating ever!

Thanks, but in my best "chin up" style, I reckon that any side that could maintain that sort of posession and with an extra man of the field and couldn't score before extra time, probably (and I emphasise PROBABLY) didn't really deserve to win, much as I'd like to believe otherwise.

Great match though!

Cheers,

P

didn't really deserve to win
And Italy did? I think we deserved to win just for keeping THEM out for so long, it's not like they didn't have plenty of shots (more than us I think). To have them get it on a ####house decision right on the death knock like that, it's a lousy way for us to exit. Shattered.

Italy are probably the best defensive side in the world. Even without Nesta and down to ten men. Their skills leave ours for dead but we kept up with and beat them in most other aspects of the game.

Apparently handball in the box is not a penalty anymore?

Apparently tripping over someone all ready lying still on the ground is a penalty?

This game was an opportunity convince non (round) football watchers to start enjoying the game? I'll go back to my Formula 1 (which I also know is an acquired taste!) At least in F1 if someone trips over someone else who is already stationary, there is a good chance he'll end up making a spectacular smear on the nearest wall.

Im facinated that we had an Australian sporting team go to an international cometition and not even win one single game, yet everyone seems to be telling me they came of age:confused: Think ill go back to watching Australian Footy for some real action on the field. Harry Kool didnt play because of gout. I wonder if gout would have kept Barry Hall & Co, out of the GF.... Not:rolleyes:

Try to pay attention!

We won the first (Japan) lost the second (Brazil) drew the third (Croatia), all of which got us into the second round. Then we lost to Italy. No-one expected us to get that far and it beats our last effort hands down. That's what all the excitement is about. Even getting into the finals was a huge thing because of the way they do the draws.

It's not going to convince die hard haters of the game but it's a shame that we can't at least acknowledge what has been achieved.

Nice comeback Felder :)

btw - speaking from experience, if Barry Hall et al had gout, they'd be sidelined as much as Harry was (didn't know he was out for it). It bloody hurts.

Lignum, if you're trying to make a point about Aussie Rules players being tougher than blokes who play Association Football, you won't make your case. I can - without thinking too hard - cite two examples: Geoff Strong of Liverpool playing most of a Cup Final with a broken collar bone (which must have been agonising) and Bert Trautmann, Manchester City's goalkeeper famously playing most of a Cup Final with a broken neck! This was in days before substitutes were allowed, you understand.

What is it about football (round ball variety) that inspires such derision from some followers of other codes?

Where I grew up (in North-West England), you were considered to be a limp-wristed nancy boy if you didn't or couldn't play football. I played Rugby Union for the school and football in a local team. My brother played hockey for the county and football for the same local team. Neither of us faced any criticism for playing other sports - so long as we played football, too. Since coming to live in Oz, I've grown to really appreciate and enjoy Aussie Rules - but not so as to make derisory comparisons with other codes - and my young bloke plays and loves the game.

The Socceroos did us very proud with their performances at the highest level tournament in world football. We should pay them the greatest respect for what they achieved against truly world-class opposition. The Azzuri are a great side. They'll take the win however it comes, as will any other team. Australia didn't deserve to have their performance rewarded by a blatantly unfair refereeing decision and FIFA have a helluva lot to answer for in the appalling standard of officiating at this World Cup.

Rant mode off!

"'ere lad, don't be cissy. It's nowt but broken neck!"

Hahahaha. Best laugh I've had all day. Thanks.

Google his name, Craig. You might be surprised.

Welcome back from your slumbers, by the way.
