I was recently given a Stanley #60 1/2 block plane for my 50th Birthday (after many hints and leaving of catalogues around). I am a bit keen on planes so I thought that I would follow a plane tuning routine that I read somewhere. This envolve gluing a piece of emery cloth to a sheet of glass and then, with the blade retracted smoothing the sole of the plane. This process was repeated with finer and finer grades of paper until the sole was like a mirror. I was amazed at how much better this made the plane work. I have now treated all my planes to this same routine. Wow they are so much better to use. I highly recommend this.
