View Full Version : has the forum become disreputable?

Well from where i am sitting, it seems the forum has become very disreputable. The reputation system is a very neglected forum tool since it was revamped some time ago.
now please understand that i fully supported the revamp of the rep system as in its previous incarnation it had become unfair, for want of a better word.
When it was revamped, I was hoping that it would be adopted once again by teh members as a one-click method of saying "yes i like that" or "no i dont" to their opinions, as it had been a year ago when i first joined, in a spirit of fun and not taken too seriously.
it all went pear-shaped when some of us got enough hitting power to wipe out the small players in one hit. those days are over, everyone. its all about seeing someone giving you a little pat on the back, always nice to openthe user cp and seeing another greenie there, its not about climbing ladders.
I know a few of us are still sending out heaps of greenies, jools and i are, but they seem to be a rare commodity compared to what they used to be.
So lets see some movement once again in the reputation stakes http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/images/icons/icon10.gif

nothing serious, stoppers, just observing that not that long ago, people were using the rep system to be nice to each other and hoping we can start doing it again. Im sure you like to open your user cp and find a greenie or two in there letting you know that your contribution has been worthwhile and is appreciated. i know i find it a great feeling. i havenever made a post with the intention of earning a greenie but its a pleasant surprise when you get one, and it makes the day so much better

Think you'll find it was only a small minority who gave points, matter of fact, it's only a very small minority who even know what they are and how to use them. Most come here for the woodwork and not the points.
However if it's points you want. Here..... I giveth.

Must say I agree totally. I only come here for the information that a group of wonderful individuals share so readily. The fact that there are a couple of tossers here and there just makes it more like reality. I have learnt who's opinions to value and who's to ignore and who's to read and laugh at all by myself without the aid of greenies!!! ;) And I didnt even know I could go into my user CP to see comments.

I agree with Doug in that it is nice to see them. I send them frequently and I do check from time to time to see if I have got any. I don't take it seriously, but it is a nice thing side interest. However, I know that I give far more than I receive (maybe that is saying something :D  ).
However, I doubt you will see much "movement" in the reps at the top end as the rep points are all very high, but the amount that are awarded since the latest revamp are much smaller, thus you don't see movement at the top end much at all.
Mind you, that shouldn't really matter if you just like to see them as someone saying thanks for taking part. :D
I don't see the rep system as adding a lot to the forums, but I do think that it adds something small extra quirk or interest (for me at least).
As for Jekyll and Hyde up above, the company man advertises, the individual tells you what he thinks. :p :D ;)

thats right cameron, i see them as just a little something to show that your efforts are appreciated, and it means something that someone takes the time to say so. its like sending a little card or someone giving you a sixpack for letting them use your thickneser for half an hour. its just a little token of appreciation that is always well received. :) :) :)

So do I, but every time I go to give a greenie the computer won't let me and I won't give out greenies willy nilly just to get over the 20 greenies hurdle.
I think the increase to 20 before being able to give again was a mistake and is stopping the giving of a quick note or comment on a good post.

What do you mean BECOME disreputable?
I'm still giving out greenies, but nowhere near as many as before. The system simply won't let me. :( I'll send the odd "joke" greeny out, but most of mine have been for posts that have merit.
Is it my fault that it always seem to be the same people who're making worthwhile contributions? And that there's less than 20 of 'em? So... with the new, "improved" (HISS! BOO! ) limits I have to send out gratuitous greenies just so I can send to the ones that merit 'em. As that goes against the grain, I'm rapidly running up a heap of IOUs instead.
For example, I still can't fire one your way... and how long ago was the last?

I get frustrated by the same thing - if a person is making numerous valuable posts, perhaps they deserve the greenies. I know the limit is in place to stop abuse of the system - some people always ruin it for the rest of us.
Here, have another virtual greenie.

I just looked it up Skew, the last greenie you sent me was on 2 may, nearly 6 weeks ago. and now that several people have mentioned it, I too have tried to send probably 3 times as many greenies as the system will let me under the revised rules. I dont think i should be forced to lower the standard i believe deserves a greenie in order to reward more often those who regularly make exemplary posts.

Exactly.
And by the same token, I think it's devalued the greeny. I've looked at the ones I've recieved recently and I can't help but wonder how many of 'em were only given so the sender could fire one at a more deserving post?
Instead of being pleased at finding a new green pressie in my CP I'm beginning to feel more like "Oh. Another stocking filler" :(

yes ive wondered the same, but then i look at the reddies ive been sent from this thread, and i wonder if they, too are just so they can send greenies to someone else. reddies and greenies count equally in your 20. i contemplated increasing the reddies i send out but i would rather save them for really deserving cases. sometimes i send a green in response to a red, just to show the red-giver that im just a nice guy. but i had better add quickly, before everyone sends me a red, that im even more likely to send a green in response to a green. :D :D :D

This doesn't bother me as all the meaningful rep lies with the forumites based on what one posts - good, bad or indifferent.

One of the reasons that the rep limit was put to 20 posts was to limit "stacking" of rep point. We know it is still going on and we know who but it has decreased a bit.
I don't always like Neils decisions here but he pays the bills to allow me to be able to be here so any decision that he makes I respect and I don't whinge about it!!!

The new system Sucks with a Capitol S and now the whole Rep system is under threat of becoming a meaningless waste of time. I just hope sanity prevails n the powers that be go back to the old ways of doing things.
For those of you that want to mess around with what is and what already works get yourselves to the Shed for some well earned R&R and focus on what the forums about .................things to do with Woodworking

Auld Bassoon - I just turned your rep points back on for you. They weren't touched by myself or any of the mods. Must have been inadvertently done by you, either that or there's an awfully coincidental gremlin in the works.
Here is the simple answer to all the bull dust about the rep points:
We put everyone back to square one. All will have the same amount of points and each will be allowed to submit points to anyone they please for the quality of their post. However only 1 point will be able to be doled out at a time.
Preferably with comments like: "good post", "nice work", excellent answer", "thank you", "off subject", "hijacker", "spamer go away" etc. etc.
Not comments like this one - http://www.ubeaut.biz/nono.gif "cos u is a wonderful person and have a very sexy bum 2 " http://www.ubeaut.biz/fie.gif NO NO NO....
Any genuine comments about the answer to the problem would be appreciated.

You may not want comments, but inevitably they will come.
Who has a sexy bum? Ruffy? Maybe, The lady with the big pink type? Perhaps.
Excepting these (and a few I've probably missed - sorry girls) this forum seems to be a sexy bum desert. A sexy bum free zone.
Personally I'd rather dwell on how we can get some more sexy bums than on how we distribute and rate little green red or green thingos.
This is meant to be about woodwork and other DIY type stuff, isn't it?

Hey Wendy,
I have no problem with that at all. they are your greenies and you give them to whomever you wish, for whatever you wish, except for sexy bums, apparrently.
this was not a greenie gathering exercise on my part. I was just wondering why there were fewer of them going round, and reminding people how nice it is to give and receive a little appreciation now and again. I just thought it makes the forum a pleasanter place to be.http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/images/icons/icon14.gif

Sure they do - the person receiving them sees you valued their post enough to commend them on it. And you don't have to spread false ones around to be able to give out the occasional justified one. When you feel like giving someone a pat on the back (or a kick in the goolies), give em a greenie (or a reddie).
There is no point doing it for people with black (ie disabled) rep points - they have chosen not to participate, and won't see what you have given them anyway.

Studley, to me your greenie will still be as valuable as ever, a personal message saying well done. There is an order of merit?
There was a thing a while ago about the rep system and whether to keep it or not. I thought it was fine. On the Bulletin Board I host it actually shows your points.
The points system for me was a real attraction. It was so neat to see my moniker change too as I made more posts and it was really nice to get rep from people. Everyone likes a pat on the back. Personally I wouldn't have changed a thing. There are always people who moan about things and presure the admins to change things but I think the people that matter don't care that much.
