Hi folks,
For those that have Foxtel, Is it worth the getting? We are umming and erring at the moment and I though I would get some outside advice.
Also what plans would you recomend ( like where are the WoodWork shows:D )

the how to channel for woodies stuff
i rekon its worth it but you need the comedy channel and if you have younger kids all the cartoon networks are good.

Himzo, I had it and got rid of it. They dropped the NYW and started getting ads everywhere. Waste of money.

I have the platinum package. With teenagers in the house it is worth it. It keeps them at home. If it was not for the teenies, it would be a waste but then I do enjoy the How To channel, and some others as well. Whether it is worth it will depend on what you value. I am a little disappointed with the increase of ads on Foxtel over the last 3 years. Sometimes I channel hop and get ads on 10 channels at the same time.

Hi,
Personally I like Foxtel but then I love sport, music, DIY, money markets, films, "POMMIE" TV series (new & old) and many more stations. If you have a very busy working/social life then it may not be worth it as you may not get your monies worth. As regarding adverts, having lived in the UK for sometime the number of commercials on Fox is small in comparison, so I wouldn't complain on that issue alone. I know I can waste $50 a month far more easily elsewhere;).

Im cancelling my subscription in 15 days (contract expires). I have had it for a number of years. When I first got digital there were 3-4 good woodworking shows, now its down to 1 (woodworks) and even then its the same bloody episodes!!
To be honest I am going to miss the docos but its not worth the $$$ for me.
If you were considering getting it for the woodie stuff you'd be better off upgrading your internet and watching the Woodworking channel its even got some of the same shows!
I am also hoping that by getting rid of it I'll actually find time to get into the workshop instead of watching other people doing stuff on tv!

Like you I have been ummming and arrring for a while.
I have decieded against it for the time being.....
I want it almost purely for the sport and I dont mind the odd doco either but the minimum package that includes sport is about $70 a month.
For $70 a month I can go to the pub to watch the brumbies play. And it gives me a good excuse to get to the pub or my mates place!
"Going to the pub to watch the game sweetie...... Unless of course you want me to get fox?"
"No thats fine, off you go" ;)

Not worth getting for the woodwork shows. There aren't any, except Woodworks. The rest of the How To channel is American crap about quilting and scrapbooking (whatever that is).
We mainly watch it for sport, music, Box Office (pay per view new release movies), UKTV, ABC and SBS. We get better reception on the latter two than from free to air. The kids watch Nick Junior.
We can afford it, so not really an issue. If things got tight it would be the first thing to go though. Are you reading this, Mr Foxtel? Lift your game mate!!

How much more TV do you want to watch other than the 5 free to air channels?
To me it is 5% of “It will be nice to have it” and 95% of “What a waste of money.” A bit like a mobile phone reallly.
So its a big no from me.

Agree all the way with that
The grandkids like nick jr, and the MIL likes the old movies.
For me its the sport , history and discovery, news and UKTV

Decided against it for now. Price wasn't an issue. Just have better things to do with my money.

We were thinking of getting it particularly for the How To channel but it sounds as though this channel isn't that good although when I looked at the monthly program guide it didn't look too bad. We are being driven to payTV because of the unbelievably poor television on the Free to Air garbage which is aimed at the 18 to 30 market but it amazes me that even they'll watch that stuff.

It's not something I'd get for m'self because I don't watch enough television to make it worthwhile, but daughter just bought it for her 94 year old grandfather, and he certainly gets her money's worth - mainly sport, national Geo and information channels. Best present she could have chosen.

we dont use the TV a lot so no need for it though like the lineup so could be a choice later

I used to install it, so had a free service, which was just as well cause it sure ain't worth paying for! The first month or 2 it's OK until the interminable repeats start to become familiar. As I'm not a big sport watcher (prefer doing to watching, on the whole) and I don't want the kids completely square-eyed, there's no value in it for me.

Well it has kept my mother-in-law quiet for the past fortnight. So that's worth the annual fee in itself;) :D.

I used to be a motel dweller and that turned me right off pay TV, blatant never ending self promotion, just as you thought a movie was about to start it was yet another ad telling you what a great choice you had made in choosing XX channel.
Used to drive me mad.
The only redeeming feature I found was after driving to SA and feeling buggered I would fall asleep in front of the TV, but, at 6.30am I could pick up where I left off for an hour or so and that night at the next motel finish the movie.
As earlier stated, new release movies, but they don't tell you they go on for about three months beofre a new one arrives.

I sent them an email after reading these posts (and from my own Foxtel experience). They replied very promptly, and seemed to genuinely listen, so guys - get emailing!

Here's what I sent:
Hi,
So what did happen to the decent lineup of woodworking shows that attracted us to Foxtel in the first place? At one stage there were a collection of them, and some were quite good for more advanced woodworkers. These days, it seems there are only repeats of Wood Works (and how can anyone realistically actually be doing stuff in a workshop in a business suit anyway?) and Tools & Techniques which was never particularly good, as it glosses over the top of the subjects, and the host deliberately seems to 'dumb it down' way too much (to the point that he seems to insult his guests).
Can we please cater for a wider range of activities - we are not all renovating a house or garden, or scrapbooking it. Personally, more woodworking, metalworking (and not the artistic stuff, real practical structures), photography (and again, cater for a wider audience, not just the novices).
I used to have the How To channel on almost continually, yet for the last 6 months or so, I cannot honestly remember turning it on once. I miss it, and would like to have some reason to switch back.
Cheers
Stuart

Their reply:
Hi Stuart,
Thanks a lot for the feedback. We do like to hear from our viewers whether it be positive or negative. We are constantly on the lookout for good woodworking shows and surprisingly they are difficult to find. We are looking at making an Aussie woodworking show soon so stay tuned for an update on that. Hopefully we can add a few more woodworking shows to the line-up in the coming months as we know there is a big following out there.
Thanks again for taking the time to write to us and we hopefully there will be a number of shows coming up that will bring you back to the HOW TO Channel.
So guys & gals, start emailing, and lets get them focused back onto subjects WE want to see!
