They had a childrens play tower that was at least 1500 to the platform, but only had balustrading about 600 high. That wouldn't be legal on a house, so why can it be done where kids are likely to be boisterousand try and do superman imitations?

I don't think that kid's play structures technically are required to meet the BCA requirements... but I have no idea why.
On the other hand, last time I looked at a kid using that sort of stuff, he was about 60% of my height, so 60% of a normal balustrade height for a kids structure would seem about right to me! ;) .
Poor little buggers only ever get to see out through bars in a grown-up world!

If I'd put a 900mm balustrade on my kids cubby, it would have been above the roofline!

And tell me those kids are going to leave that pump alone that is under the cubby. It does have a lid on it!!!!

I reckon the yard looked better before they started. KIds should eat more dirt.

G'day,
For my 2cents it's like Seinfield, a show about absolutely nothing. You learn more about building stuff watching Play School than you do Backyard %hitz.

...and if you see an adult up in a kid's cubby you should ask him "so when are you going to pull your finger out and build a proper dog-house?" :D

The kids would climb up it and jump off no matter how high you made it

Many of the criticisms of the show are quite fair - but in this case I believe they are corrent. Playgrounds are allowed potential falls (and hence little balustrading) because they are surrounded by a particular speciification of mulch, either a certain grade of organic mulch to 400mm deep, or a rubberised surface. These have to meet Australian Standards to qualify. You may have also noticed that there was a lot of space around the equipment - there are minimum distances from any part of the equipment to the edge of the mulch.
I have read some research though, that showed that the types of injuries caused in playgrounds from falls greater than 1.5m are much more serious than those from lower distances (not really rocket science), and that you should avoid 1.5m+ drop-offs when designing equipment.
