View Full Version : Your favourite Chinese dish

I know what you lot are like. You go to a Chinese restaurant. You whinge about there are no pictures on the menu. You ask silly question like “oh garlic king prawn, what’s in it?” You make the poor bugger, who gets paid $8 per hour, standing and waiting for you for 5 minutes and you end up ordering the usual “swit sour pok” or “king and broccoli” or “fly rice”. How pathetic!

So tell us what dish do you disgracefully order every time.

Ok I will start.:D We always get Pork in Peking sauce. Trust me it is very good. My wife and daughter just love it.

:D

There all pretty good to me, as long as the kitchens clean.

What cracks me up is the names of the restraunts in places like china town. As though they were made up during their first week of english school.

uno....Happy Happy dina. ......or ......The Golden smile......names like that.

Wongo,
am I only allowed one dish? When we eat Chinese we go as a big family group and always order a whole heap of dishes centre serve - best way to eat Chinese food as you get to taste a lot of different dishes. Favourites:
Sizzling Mongolian Lamb (alright, so it's Mongolian and not Chinese)
Garlic Beef
Lup Chong ( both duck and pork liver)
Honey King prawns
combination short soup
garlic chicken
all eaten with white rice using chopsticks and a bowl, washed down with a couple of beers. If any of you is ever in Cairns the very best Chinese restuarant is "Kee Kong", it's so good that the owners of the most expensive reatuarant in Cairns for many years ("Tawnys", now gone sadly) ate there every Sunday night.

Went with the BBQ pork in plum sauce , closest I could get to the two I cook most
Pork fillits in plum sauce
And pork ribs in BBQ sauce
Next would have to be good fried rice.

But in Japan the Goat testicle has got to be right up there, espically with a fried silk worm entree.

I gotta agree with Silent.

Peking Duck is great.

Sweet and Sour Pork

Pork Bows (rice flour buns)

Prawn Toast

Crispy Skin Chicken

BBQ Pork Spare Ribs

The only thing is that I have had this and been to a friends place whose grandmother was always cooking what they called traditional Chinese food - very different. What we call Chinese they called Royal Chinese.

Anyway, one day I was there and they said - have you ever had abalone, I said no (but I have now) and they gave me this stuff. My friend said that it didn't taste like abalone afterall, he went in and asked what it was...

sea slug.

Basically, it was just like salty leather.

Hi Scott!

OK, I'll fall for this :)

I really like Chinese food, and often visit Melbourne's China Town and try the various regional dishes.

The very limited selection (and wholly disregarding the #'s), that you offer, is only a small part of the repertoire.

There are a couple of places that I go to quite often, and having told the family (almost always family run places) what I do like (most) and don't like (not all that much, but do draw the line at a chook's head...), I just ask for what they are having...

Yes Jules go cats if you know what I mean. :D

Tonight I was going to cook some stir fried Chinese broccoli with garlic. But I thought my mate bitingmidge loves boiled vegs with oyster sauce. So I boiled some water, added a few drops of oil and boiled the vegs for a few minutes. Drained it and added oyster sauce.

Yum.

Rendang (wonderful that it is) ain't Chinese, it is an ethnic Malay dish.

Asia is a huge continent, with many varied and distinct peoples. The Chinese may be the most populous, but all Asians aren't Chinese! Then there's the Sub Continent!

Even China has many different ethnic groups. The Hakka, who traditionally lived on boats in the Canton area, would probably feel no closer to a Beijing native than I would feel to a Federal Politician.

Wongo could no doubt expand on this with far greater eloquence - the Chinese ethnicity I mean, not the blood suckers in Canberra.

Anyway, my votes for Peking Duck (would it be more PC to say Beijing Duck?)

Is the Flower Drum still good? Haven't been there for years, but it used to be marvellous. As good as the Imperial Peking at the Quay, before they lost it.

No restuarants seem to be able to maintain their standards. It must be a tough business. Even that icon Vlado's is apparently very, very average now, used to be so good. Great for o/s visitors foolish enough to say they enjoy steak.

Only place that seems to have kept up the standard is Tetsuya - still good and innovative as ever.

Sorry Wongo, back to your diet.

Mongolian Lamb, providing its done properly, not just a bit of lamb soaked in some goop.
Soak lamb in water for thirty minutes to remove blood, squeeze dry, marinate twice................
The only place I ever found that did it right was a little restaurant in Crookwell of all places while we were on a fly fishing trip a few years ago.
Apart from that get Charmaine Solomans book on Asian cooking to get it right.
Apart from that we like yum cha at WestLake.
Too many chineses restaurants in the suburbs are all the same, must be someone selling mass produced sauces as I reckon they all taste like crap, and rotten with MSG which gives me a screaming headache for the next two days.
