Hi all,
This post is especially directed at newbies (people who have been a member for less than a year).
PLEASE take the time to respond (even if you have only just joined or even if you are a lurker).
I personally reckon that it is a very welcoming forum...
If you are in doubt as to whether you are a newbie or not, assume you are a newbie and recall how you were welcomed.

NOTE: It is a private poll so don't be afraid of retribution.

So would I Outback! :p ;)
All jokes aside, note (for anyone who can't see the orange room or missed the post) that this was started as the welcomingness of the forum was questioned in open slather and I wanted to get a better picture of what most newbies thought.

Hi Cameron, interesting poll, and under your definition im still a newbie for another month, having joined last may.
I have found this forum to be very welcoming. In fact when Jools and i went to melbourne in march we met many of the forumites living in melbourne and were welcomed into their homes and workshops, i even had nearly a full days tuition in woodturning by a highly respected forum member in his workshop. we also on a different occasion met a few of the toowoomba and brisbane members when we were touring down that way.
I have really enjoyed being able to help the less experienced members with advice on how to do things and have picked up a lot of good advice from inexpereinced and experienced woodworkers alike.
It has only been in the last month or so that the forum has taken on a different air, and from where i sit its because a few people have the rep points to do serious damage. they seem to now be known as the purple circle, although i doubt any serious collusion is practiced amongst them, and more than the odd reddie flies around amongst the top 20 rep points members (or is that just Zed):D

Yeah I'm only 9 months or so into this forum and have been to a few get togethers and find both in the forum and in the flesh (so to speak) it is a very welcoming forum.
There is a broad spectrum of members and diverse opinios so if you chose to jump up and down on personal preferences then others will take an opposing view - so be it. Some get offended - that's life.
Try and help one another and boast about your works (as you should :D ) then many are here to support you.
It's very Australian and we enjoy stirring one another up.
All in all it is a great forum.

Whoa! Under a year - you have been busy!:D
I read about your trip to Melbourne and was most jealous... :( It sounded awesome. Mind you, Sheddy cut down an apricot tree recently and guess who is getting the wood? :D Nice to have friends eh?
I also reckon that it is very welcoming and I have loved being a part of it (and will certainly continue to do so).
As for the rep. points counter - I got a green from Al the other day and BOYO do his pack a wallop. My rep. went through the roof...
I think that maybe an upper limit on the effect of a red (and green for that matter) should probably be put in place. That would mean that the guys at the top would pretty much be guaranteed of staying there, but what the heck? :p
I have noticed that most of the reddie seem to be sent among the top guys too (or at least most of the ones that are advertised). I think that once you get to a certain stage, you are pretty safe and the simian doesn't even have to feel all that bad (NOTE to Zed - I am not yet at that stage!! :D )
As for collusion, I reckon that is very unlikely, sure some of you up the top are mates and may think similarly, but I don't really think it is collusion. That being said, maybe sending multiple reds to someone is unnecessary? ie Once one person has sent a red (or at least one of the ones that hit hard) the rest of the hard hitters could lay off? However... if the post is really offensive maybe it is warranted... Hard to make judgement calls on this kind of thing.
Possibly a better option again would simply be to keep the sending of reds private (that way no-one knows that you are sending one and you can't be accused of encouraging antone else)??? I haven't sent a reddie and haven't felt the urge. I have seen a few posts I found objectionable, but by the time I had thought about it, the poster was already well aware of what people thought.
I dunno. Anyway, as I said - I am really happy with the way things are going here. At the end of the day, I would probably prefer nothing to change.

I was discussing collusion and the rep system with Jools only the other night. we agreed that it was possible intheory that some of the high-ups would send each other greenies forno other reason than to maintain their superior position, but we concluded that it just wasnt worth it and there was no evidence to support it, then i come home today and i find out that not only is there a purple circle but i hold a high office in that organisation !!!:D :D :D
As for holding off when someone else who packs a punch has already fired off a missile, ive done that on many an occasion. in fact on a similar thread a few months ago i asked if it was possible to set the system so we can send off a fraction of a reddie, eg a box comes up and says "your reddies are worth 351 points, how hard do you want to hit?" and you can enter any number from 1 to 351, so you can control the damage you do commensurate with how much you disagree with the "offending" post. but hey its a woodworking forum, not a popularity contest. and it is really starting to bug me that the most discussed topic on the forum over the last month seems to be the reputation system, which at the end of the day has no real meaning.:( :( :(

The idea of weighted reds isn't a bad idea, but you are right, at the end of the day, it is fairly meaningless (until I get on top... then it is the most important thing in the world)! ;)

I also think that this is a welcoming forum, nobody jumps on newbies if they ask what may seem a silly question but try to help them with their problems.
Of course if they are spammers, trolls, idiots, wankers or people that make accusations without foundation or play the man rather than an issue newbie status will not help you instead the forum will react accordingly.
I don't know who is amongst the purple circle, maybe you have to be an orange room member  to qualify, but I believe my red wallop does pack a punch and if some post really annoys me I send of not one but two reddies in response.
For I believe that if it's worth doing it's worth doing twice.:D Double trouble, double wallop.:D

I don't care really. Sorry. Hows that for honesty.
But, I do instinctly backup at prick like comments and sarcastic comments directed at those who are just trying to understand something, no matter how stupid it may seem to others. That starts an arguement. And newbies are often drawn to sites like these in the first place, cause they want to learn something. Which is great.
The sort of posts that come out of the blue, quoting just a couple of words, often taking something completely out of context, including a 'rolling the eyes' picture thingy and maybe a single word or two....and then vanish. No input to the discussion other than that. Lovely.
And I'm not particularily fond of a couple of members  , dispite the fact that I have no idea really who or what they are .......but it ok isn't it, for them to roll their eyes at me and speak as though they know me very well.....Clever psychic buggers ! How do they do it.....
But then, all relationships start that way eh. We'll be best mates before the year is out...I know maybe I should send them some chocolates (I should roll my eyes now right ? .. thats whats normally done about now isn't it )

G'day,
It's a top joint in this cyber world forum thing, had lots of help here and in the flesh from some of the mob in here.
Only thing is spending time here means less time in the shed doing what I like best - heck, shed time even eats into my day job wbecause it's to easy to think I'll do what I've got to do today tomorrow, like this week gone - man I'll be busy as next week to make up for it.
So there's a purple circle hey? Who'll be the first to change his/her avitar to a purple circle I wonder? What are the perks? Can I join? Can I, I can I?

As a newbie having served only a few months, voted for welcoming.
It's generally a very welcoming place. Everyone seems to get a chance to speak thier mind. And those that open thier mouths just to change feet are dealt with appropriately in my opinion. It seems noobs are given a chance to contribute.
I took my obligatory slapping from Christopha for starting my first thread in the wrong forum :o but hey #### happens and we wouldn't want any special treatment now.:D
Don't quite get the rep points thing but IMO not really needed. After reading for a while it becomes easier to see who's advice appears to have greatest value.
That said, although I came here to learn stuff (as most newbies I'd imagine) it's the community that keeps us coming back and wanting to be a part of (oh and Doug's avatars of course).
Cheers blokes,
Glenn

OK, I voted definitely a welcoming forum and also a newbie, I look to the more gifted of the group for help and to the other members who are very clever in thier own right. I think that if you can not take a bit of flack, maybe you should be expected to be a target for a bit of fun, I have been a target myself, and hope I have been seen to take it in my stride. In the same respect, I have my own opinions and stand by them, even though others may see them as wrong and I attract a bit of ridicule, I hold no malice toward those that have the guts to speak against me, it is thier right.
This is a great place to spend a bit of time, learn, make friends and have a laugh, also to show-off your work and admit you make mistakes and how you overcome them.

I voted Newbie: Yep, I'm here ain't I?
I assume you mean all the woodworkforums - if not you can discard the following
I am a member of 5 forums (Computers [10 years], Coffee [2 years], Beer [4 years], Photography [3 years] and this one [3 months] ). Apart from this one I only really still post regularly on the Coffee forum, the others I lurk in on about a weekly basis. Apart from the computing forum (I joined that when it was a listserve and can't remember what it was like) all the other forums were welcoming in one way or another. Maybe the photography forum was the least welcoming and the Ratebeer.com forum was the most welcoming. These guys are amazing. I arrived in Ottawa and the local members held an international beer party!! I arrive in Washington and they hold another! I guess its an excuse to drink but otherwise phenomenal hospitality.
Nevertheless I would say I have learned more from this forum than from all the others. Some of this may be due to my relative lack of knowledge of the fine art of woodworking. Everyone has been very helpful- thanks. I'd like to think that eventually I can help others as much as I have been helped.

Interesting point raised by Carry.
Without Carry having to spell it out, what could be seen as soft , or at least questionable content you wouldn't want school age kids seeing?
Booby avatars & "blue" humour would be my guess.
Not judging or sermonising in the least here, I'm one of the contributors of rank humour, just examining what we take for granted.
This then raises the question, does the marginal content form part of the fabric of our forums that we wouldn't want to lose?
I reckon "yes". As much as the forums contain a hell of a lot of useful information, they are also a meeting place and social hub for people that are, in the main, adults, and as such reflect the topics, humour, etc that adults discuss and use.
Cheers.................Sean, provoked into thought  :D

OK, well I guess that when I think of '' I think of the dictionary definition of pornography, which is:
obscene literature, art, or photography, designed to excite sexual desire.
Now, I'm sorry to say that nothing I have ever read here excites any sexual desire in me, and I feel sorry for anyone in whom it does. I take your point on the avatars, which I suppose could be classified as 'soft ' but it would be a very puritan view of it, given what you see on Video Hits of a Saturday morning.
I agree you want to protect kids from some of the stuff that is out there, but I think that the mods do a good enough job of keeping it clean and I wouldn't have any reservations about having kids around here.
CameronPotter
26th April 2006, 10:57 AM
At first I sent Carry Pine a PM suggesting that he clarify his views with the FAQ or Al or or even Neil, but I can see how he wouldn't want to be accused of encouraging kids to come and ogle some of the avatars here. There is a difference between this and Saturday TV - the teacher doesn't expressly encourage the kids to watch that. Also, I would say that most of the videos weren't zoomed in shots.
That being said, I don't find anything offensive here, well... maybe that shot of Al in his foilie suit... ;)
However, teachers have to be very careful about what they recommend in our super-sensitive society. :(

We got to be so sensitive because we got to be so litigious and developed a victim mentality. Thus, if something happens that can be construed wrong, it usually is...

Guys, don't get me wrong here. I'm not advocating changing the forum- I responded to a poll!
I enjoy the forum and get a lot from it but I do make the observation that I cannot refer students to the site for the above reasons.
I have noticed a number of high school students asking for advice lately. That's different. They have found the forum and are genuinely in need of help. If they go looking in other threads or get help from someone with a dodgy avatar, that is no reflection on their teacher.

Surely your not suggesting that some of the avitars are pornographic or that because someone has an avitar with boobs that this is a reflection on that person and to the help that they may be able to give through their experience?
CameronPotter
26th April 2006, 01:13 PM
I think he is more saying that he doesn't want to be the teacher to refer the students to a site with bouncing mammaries.
More to do with how it might be perceived than anything is my guess. If the students found it all by themselves, well that would be another matter!
Waldo

I think the problem lies in the fact that some things , avatars, jokes , suttle double meanings, etc could if monitered by "Polittically Correct Parents" whos little darling has never seen anything like that , according to them, could cause Carry a problem, and as a teacher finds it better not to suggest this or I would think any forum, Imagine If one of his students got involved with some bottom feeding preditator they met on a forum that he as their teacher recomended. Even though it was a woodwork, needlework , or anything at all and was recomended with the best of intentions.

Really, it is a sad state of affairs though that you can't suggest something useful because of the potential for backlash. Sad, but unfortunately true... :(

I'm a noob for another week or so...yep, I reckon this is a welcoming forum: lots of encouraging advice and good conversations, several meet&greet barbeques, and a few one-on-one shed tours and getting on the turps with Studley, plus secret handshakes at the woodworking shows, pancake recipies and foilie designs (all ineffective, hehe!). And still only one member on my ignore list, and just one red from Zed.:)
Haven't heard of the purple circle (something to do with MFKL? a stalwarts-only thing?), or Ruffly's "Club".

Don't say that too loudly or it might be remedied!
As for the purple circle - that was brought up in a discussion about newbie bashing and thus prompted this poll to see what people think (including those who aren't members).
As for Ruffly's club, it is all to do with listening to the wood. See here for where it started:
http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?t=30391
and here for where I got my "membership":

All just a bit of fun really (and a chance to use the Mickey Mouseketeer smilie). :D

I know that a lot of members think that all this political correctness stuff is a load of BS and some of it maybe, but the fact is that is exists and we have to live with it.
I can easily see carry pine's point of view and it is very valid. The question is, do we want to the forums able to be viewed by anyone from anywhere, or do you guys want your little eccentricities that badly?

If it means bowing and scraping to the lowest common denominator of what someone else thinks we should be looking at/doing/saying then I say #### em. :p

Hear, hear to SilentC's post above! And to poitical correctness, it's minority forcing their values/ideals on the majority...
then I say #### em. :p

Video hits, Al, Video Hits. They've seen it all before. Here we are worried about some animated GIFs and a few lewd jokes and out there you've got "Don't you wish your girlfriend was hot like me?". Let's get some perspective, man!!

G'day,
I failed perspective in Tec Drag at school. Whatever anyone does, some poor bloke will always take offence, if in doubt a group hug and a bonding session with singing Coombya does the trick, if that doesn't work there's not much else we can do to help those who call blackboards chalkboards and fishermen fishers. :p

I have learned soooo much from this forum and enjoy being able to refer others to articles in magazines etc.
My only regret (gripe) is that I cannot refer my school students to the forum because of the (or light ) that exists on accessible threads.
Carry Pine
I think Carry Pine makes a valid point (and the resulting discussion supports this).
One possible solution is in the user options:
<fieldset class="fieldset"><legend>Visible Post Elements</legend> <table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="3" width="100%"> <tbody><tr> <td>You have the option to show or hide various elements of messages, which may be of use to users on slow internet connections, or who want to remove extraneous clutter from posts.</td> </tr> <tr> <td> <label for="cb_showsignatures"><input name="options[showsignatures]" value="1" id="cb_showsignatures" checked="checked" type="checkbox">Show Signatures</label><input name="set_options[showsignatures]" value="1" type="hidden">
<label for="cb_showavatars"><input name="options[showavatars]" value="1" id="cb_showavatars" checked="checked" type="checkbox">Show Avatars</label><input name="set_options[showavatars]" value="1" type="hidden">
<label for="cb_showimages"><input name="options[showimages]" value="1" id="cb_showimages" checked="checked" type="checkbox">Show Images (including attached images and images in [IMG] code)</label>
</td></tr></tbody></table></fieldset>
Recommend that the individual student turns off the Avatars, and all is safe again for the students, and their parents.

Silent,
a spade is an implement for cutting and turning over soil (gardening) whereas a shovel is an implement for digging or scooping up soil or other materials. Look it up in your Wikiwhatever.:p

Carry - We actually have the ability to block children from these forums until the site is checked out by parents and approval given, etc. It is called COPA (Child Online Protection Act) moderation we can put it in place and enforce it if required.
Pretty sure we also have is the ability to block avatars from their view and restrict them from certain areas like jokes, etc. that might be classed as politically incorrect.
Cheers - Neil :)

Haven't heard of the purple circle (something to do with MFKL? a stalwarts-only thing?), or Ruffly's "Club".
Hi Zen, As Cameron said, my so-called 'club' is just me poking heaps of fun at myself, and now that a couple of other members have 'joined' or maybe I should say 'owned up', I don't feel so wierd anymore confessing that 'wood talks to me' (believe me I thought I was going seriously crazy there for a while :o )
It has absolutely nothing to do with purple, I don't think I've even read that thread, or want to, not that there was any association in the first place.
I think this forum is very welcoming. If I can get on board, a female to boot, and be welcomed, supported and laughed with then yes, this is a welcoming board.
cheers

Now Mick, if you had done that yourself you would have found that a spade is typically classified as a type of shovel ;)
A spade is designed primarily for breaking up ("spading") clumps of soil. A spade usually has a point and is designed to be pushed into the soil with a foot. Spade blades usually have a rounded face without sharply upturned sides.

As Waldo said, our pics are tool and wood pics ;)

Good luck with your bunk bed project - love to see some pictures.
