View Full Version : Domain hosting?

Hi guys.

I am thinking of doing a website in the near future.
How much band width would I require to have?

The site will be about the Victorian Goldrush of the 1850's with pictures, links etc.

Its been a passion of mine for a while, I even started doing the ground work some time ago, but some IT dill formated my hard drive on me for some reason?

For a Victorian Goldrush website, no offense, but not very much! Remember same rules as here though, keep the piccys down to a reasonable size.

If you want to get a domain name, register somewhere like dotster.com (you'll get a .info address for $2.95 US for the first year) and pay $5.00 per year for "masked" URL forwarding.

That way, you can use your freebie site provided by your ISP, and if the bandwidth starts to be exceeded, you can pay for a better service while keeping the same URL! (Just direct it to another site)

You can also use the service to tack on subdomains (no additional cost) like Echidna does, for instance www.ozwinner.com could have the subdomain www.gladI'mnotsillyas.ozwinner.com

Cheers,

P

Wander through Michael Storer's pages http://www.ozemail.com.au/~storerm for an example. A lot of pages, mostly text though, reasonably high traffic for a typical "non commercial" type site, and nowhere near the limit.

You can check out the stats for the site by clicking on the buttons at the bottom of the home page, typically about 500 page loads per day.

My Goat Island Skiff Pages (http://www.peterhyndman.com/GISintro.htm) are a bit more graphic-rich, but the six-year average on them is less than 150 visits per week, so again unless you become king of the blogs, I doubt that you'll get run off your server too quickly!

Cheers,

P

Ok ozwinner, here is a good place to start:

http://www.dreamhost.com/shared/

A couple of points if I may...

* The cheapest plan at dreamhost will get you more bandwidth or space than you are likely to use.

* A US domain name registered in the US instead of via the Aussie MelbourneIT registrar will save buckets. I think we paid US$9.95/yr for our domain compared with AU$150/2 years with MelbourneIT. I see the base dreamhost package seems to include a domain registration.

* If your domain is going to be very small, you might be able to host it in your personal webspace at your ISP if they offer the service. In any case, A US domain (ozwinner.com instead of ozwinner.com.au) will be a lot cheaper.

Hope that helps,

woodbe.

Thanks guys.
Ive been Googleing and come across this mob.

Does (http://www.smartyhost.com.au/50hosting.html) it sound good or not?
I want to stick with an .au extention.

Looks ok to me, see if they have any figures on how much downtime they have. (They may not want to tell you! )

Why the .au? I don't know if it's really a handicap or not?

I second the recommendation of dreamhost. You should be able to stick any domain you like on it and you simply will not find better value for money anywhere. You even get a free domain for 12 months (.com, .net, etc). I have used many hosts including myself but dreamhost are unbeatable for 99.9% of us.

It is possible to get 12 months hosting for US$22.40 through them (pm me or email [email protected] and I will point you to how)

Also, don't think that you have to have an Australian host for an .au domain. You can host .au anywhere. You just point to the name server from the registrar. Hosting is always going to be better value in the US

Twice in the last 2 hours I have tryed Dreamhost.
Twice they have had almost no icons visable with most showing x.
So they dont fill me with confidence.

They are also one of the slowest loading sites Ive visited for a while.

I would rather pay a little more money and know the webpage is going to be viewable.

Don't get me started on why it costs about 5 times as much to register a .au domain as a plain old .com domain. Seems we free-trading aussies have got some sort of local Monopoly setup on the business.

Unless you have a good commercial reason to have a .au domain, I don't think it's worth supporting that monopoly. They are just playing on misplaced patriotism in my opinion.

Sean's right, I think you can host a .au domain on a US host.

99.9% on line of course, what else would they say? :p

I just figured that an Oz presence would be better.
You can now do www.domainname (http://www.domainname).id.au
No its not for idiot.

The .id domain is for individuals.

If I wanted to have a site I could use www.dogbreath.id.au (http://www.dogbreath.id.au)

I would go the .com domain. Something like www.goldfieldsvictoria.com (http://www.goldfieldsvictoria.com)

In case you are not aware of it, to be eligible for a ".com.au" domain, you need an ABN and/or registered business name. There's no such requirement for ".com"

I have no experience with them but have been recommended to http://www.netregistry.com.au/

They do domain names: .com.au for $44.95 for 2 years and .com for $39.90 for 2 years. They also do web hosting from $15.95 per month. (100mb storage and 5gb traffic) - presumably without annoying advertising pop-ups, etc. that usually come with free web hosting.

As a non commercial website of value to the community you should be able to get free web hosting from the Vic State Library.

You might even get assistance from tourist groups and councils.

Start by looking around the vicnet website at
http://www.vicnet.net.au/

But vicnet charges heaps if you want to use your own domain name.

So when I did The Scout Camp website I used www.netfirms.com to get a free front page (actually I set up a few different front pages)

So one of the scout camp addresses is www.brucknellpark.netfirms.com.
Which is reasonably easy for users, though not a true domain
But when you click to enter you go to the vicnet site.

Cool.
That would be great.

Make them hi res if possible, I will send you my email address so you can send them.

We went through Castlemaine on the weekend on the way back from Avoca.
I was too tired after partying on Saturday night to take any piccys.

Im after photos of any signifcant building, no matter how small the building.
Bridges.
Laneways etc.

There are some amazing buildings in Chewton that are one room shops/dwellings that are just wasting away in the elements.

I read this after your PM Al. Will see what I can find - it there is anything specific though let me know - I am not a history buff - don't know much about it, but love stonework and old building techniques. We stupidly decided to build our own house out of stone too.
Cheers

The Garfield wheel stucture.
Chewton, any of it, its all good.
Fryerstown and the ruins on the way to it..
Main buildings in Castlemaine.

Obscure angles, look at any angle and click.

I spent may a happy hour gold detecting in and around Castlemaine as you can probably tell. :p

Your outlook on Castlemaine will be different from mine, which is absolutely fantabulous from a photo point of view.

Thanks.

A little closer to home, you may want to take some pictures around warrandyte. Even do a walk around the old mine shafts, there are still a number around (though some of these have now been closed off by the council). I spent hours walking around the state park here and there are still an amazing amount of stuff still just lying around out there.

I was thinking that too.
Warrandyte was the first gold field in Vic.
