Apparently, it takes a week to build a coffin from oak but only 24 hours from balsa.
(This was a letter to the editor in yesterday's SMH so don't blame me :p )

Look. It's quite simple. It's just a really bad pun.
For those of you under 40 that aren't aware of GP's ouvre, he is most remembered for a song called "Twentyfour hours from Tulsa".
Oh, and he dropped of the perch this week too.
Do ya geddit now?

Do you guys need a joke explanation manual or something ?
It's pretty simple to understand. I think he was good, Gene Pitney.
24 hrs from Tulsa
Liberty Valance
Mecca
etc.
He seemed like a gentleman too.

i still dont get itGene Pitney was a singer popular in the 50's and 60's. He sang a song called 24 Hours from Tulsa ( a town somewhere in the USA. Tulsa rhymes with Balsa ( a very soft wood and easy to work.
Pitney died in Wales last week after a concert.
The joke is, it takes a week to build a coffin from oak but "Only 24 hours from Balsa" ryhmes with Tulsa.:D
