The Grunt's a considering buying an 11 acre property in Lancefield to build on. We decided that our 30 acres on the Campaspe is a little too remote to live on.
The block we're looking at has a few rabbit burrows on it. Any ideas on how to get rid of rabbits and their burrows. Preferably something humane.
Boxers are really crap at chasing and catching rabbits.
Chris
PS. Anyone want to buy a great property on the Campaspe with 400 metres of river frontage and great views to Mt Alexander?

Depends on wotya call humane.
1. Poison, Pindone based baits available from a rural supplier these days. It is an oat based bait, they need a few feeds of it to kill them, this makes it safer for you. You need to eat afew of them before you get sick.
2. GAstion, Phostoxin, Fumitoxin tablets. These produce phosphine gas, basically shove 'em down the burrow, cover the hole and walk away. Probably the best option.
To really get rid of them you should follow up by deep ripping the burrows, this destroys their home, although you will need to be vigilant as these same places will be the most likely place for them to start digging again.
I belive these are the only two methods, when combined with the ripping, which will eradicate the rabbits completely.

Mmmmmmm... Wabbits early in the morning or late in the arvo.
A nice custom 25/06 Remington heavy barrel varminter.
Solid bipod. Clear 24x scope. Bunnies @ long range. A mate with a custom 220 Swift.
Only headshots count.
It doesn't get more Humane than that....

.22 caliber with a nice scope
Go for head shots so the rest of the carcase is good eating. Just like chicken but less wings and more drumsticks ;)
Ian
thinking about rabbit stew when he was a kid :D
You wont wipe them out, but can keep them under control, and they are tasty.

Bow'n'arrow with bang-caps? Or are they too much like firearms?
How 'bout tying half a stick o' geli to a bunny-head shaft? Less skill involved and 'tis a good incentive to learn how to draw, aim and loose in one smooth motion. Also a good reason to learn fletching...
But AFAIK, there's no way to humanely clear out a burrow. Ferrets are the best for that job, but are hardly humane. Picking 'em off with a .22 or whatever'll thin out their numbers, if you're enthusiastic, but a few months later and you're back at square one. Mixo... [shudder] neither humane nor effective and it's stopped me from enjoying my occasional meal of underground mutton.

Best bait for fishing, ever.
Also, det cord is fun too.
Great for bringing down trees with staghorns in them.
Did this when I was younger and more of a risk taker (read foolish) .

I'm mainly worried about the burrows as Ms Grunt wants to put horses on the block. Burrows = broken legs.

A good way to clear them out would be to stick little horns on them and tell Al that they are little goats. The buggers'll be gone in a flash. ;)

Not sure. How many posts off topic would clasify as a hijack?
I've noticed that once somebody starts something like that, the off topic posts breed like wabbits.

You could scatter human hair near the burrows and around the paddock......but that isnt nearly as much fun as a 32/20.
32/20 - shot, butchered and filleted in one easy shot :D

If you are not fond of extreemly hard yakka - digging them out with pick & shovel, a LARGE Caterpiller dozer with a rip blade should put paid to Bugs & his mates, just get the local dam digger to drive over the warrens with the ripper blade down & all is sealed away for future archeologists.
Then you have to keep the fences rabbit proof & keep an eye out for any that learn how to fly :D

I dunno what you're complaining about. Let the little buggers breed ... and buy a good 22. The butcher will love you ... because you'll be providing him with stock, not buying it :D
Richard
who also remembers the taste of well cooked rabbit ... as opposed to overcooked ex-rabbit
