Hes our Lord Mayor who has been in Aus for over 20 years after migrating from China, but just cannot speak Engrish at all. Melbournites just love him because of it. He is a classic:D

He is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne but thats about all I can tell you. Don't know why that would make him popular. Maybe he defeated someone really unpopular in the last mayoral elections and all the Melbournians are just happy they didn't get the other bloke.

Regards,
Mirboo.

I think it is a bit more than his accent.

The Melbourne Establishment don't like him because of his accent as they think he is an embarrassment to them and as such they broke protocol by not letting John So receive the flag at the previous games and this role was usurped by the premier.

Then the government changed the procedure for electing Melbourne's Lord Mayor from selection by city councillors to a popularly elected Lord Mayor by the people living in the City ( not greater like Brisbane ) of Melbourne.

To the establisment's chagrin John So won easily this popularly elected position.

It is just Melbourne's way of sticking it up the establishment. A most popular T shirt at the games featured the following slogan " John So is my bro ", something that our premier hated.:D

John So has been fortunate to be Mayor during a time when the City of Melbourne has been revitalised and through events such as the Comm Games. Not all of this is to his credit, but it's better than giving Bracks a bigger head!

I reckon hes popular because he's an imigrant who has made good despite not speaking english very well.

A lot of people from all cultures would find him a welcome change from the everyday polly.

He taught science in the secondary school system, left to open a restaurant, ran for council because he did not like what the Melbourne council was doing for business.

He is on council as an independent, as Lord Mayor he has worked tersely to promote the city he can laugh at him self and make jokes about him self, the kids in Melbourne love him (at the Big Day out concert he got up and said 'lets wock' the crowd went wild). When Bracks usurped his position with the Commonwealth games he was humble about it.

He is the typical anti politician and every one loves him so much so that the Liberals have been trying to seduce him and he just ignores them.

May be we need more pollies like him instead of the self interested wankers that we have.

I think Phil has summed it up nicely .....

He was interviewed this morning on 774 ABC Melbourne by John Faine. Faine was trying to make a huge point of his popularity saying that people were likely to be poking fun and taking the .

John So's response was that the people were cheering him as he represented Melbourne. Faine just kept pushing and pushing as was a little disappointed that So wasn't going to be part of his push.

John So was actually very good in the interview ..... he answered questions directly and didn't try to avoid them like most politicians, he was very humble and came off very well.

Keep it up John So.

Just read an article on the paper. So So is my brother. :D. We both left our family in our late teens. We both had to learn a new language, studied year 12 and university in a new country.

I think I will be Mayor of Sydney in 2030. :D. I just love that huge gold necklace.

We both had to learn a new language, :

Here in Oz, we tend to intermix three languages - English, Australian and profanity :D
