Hello,
I need to refinish a cedar bookcase & dining table. Both are original finishes tho I'm unsure what . The bookcase is matte ( old shellac?) & the table has a low gloss to it but is not 2 pack. I would like to finish them to match without a high gloss finish.
Grateful to any one with the time & experience to reply.
Thanks, Bill

Traditionally most cedar was finished with shellac. You will need to strip off the old finish and shellac them both if you wish to keep the antique value of the pieces. Shellac doesn't have to be a gloss finish, it can be made to have an eggshell finish, a dry gloss or a super high shine with final finish techniques.

Wax over shellac looks good too.
