The Worst song ever is God Save the King/Queen.
Closely followed by anything vaguely religious or Country and Western.

"Advance Australia Fair"
What a God awful, maudlin dirge. "Rejoice, girt, Australians-all, toil" what a tedious, manufactured load of stilted early 19th century kraap. Cross between Enid Blyton, Dorothy Dix, Agatha Christie, Mrs Whitehouse, Margaret Thatcher, Barbara Cartland and Tami Fraser. Victoria I at prep school with a tummy ache!
The only thing I could ever agree with Gough about was:
"It should have been Waltzing Matilda"

Booger off Bodgy. Every time I hear that wondrous tune I can't but help stand to attention, salute Wee Johnny and look for an opportunity to rip my veins open in support of my country **dammit, where's the 'salute' smilie**
Richard
Actually, our national anthem is a bloody sight better than a lot of them, including that embarrassment the yanks use, but yeah, it could be better:rolleyes:

Just as well we have such a pathetic, pompous confection. I'd hate to be standing next to you at the Rugby kick off if it was more stimulating.

Anything by ABBA:mad:
And I think there's some unreasonable bias against country & western, yeah I'll admit most of it is twaddle, but sometimes a gem appears, like Johnny Cash, and there's some great stuff on the periphery...like the WAIFS, and Paul Kelly with his recent bluegrass outing.
Cheers,

I hate to sound like seven degrees of separation but...
Rick Rubin who discovered/produced the first Beastie Boys album "licensed to ill" also resurected The Man in Black's career.
Johnny Cash and Rick Rubin - now there was a collaboration - especially the cover version of Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus on American IV

Just as well we have such a pathetic, pompous confection. I'd hate to be standing next to you at the Rugby kick off if it was more stimulating.
There is NOTHING  more stimulating (to me) than going to a Bledisloe Cup with around 100,000 folk and singing the National Anthem (which I hate!!) and Waltzing Matilda (which should be the National Anthem). I mean that is a proper religion!!!! (refer to Open Slather). And after 80 minutes of rugby-love-making it is like having a cigarette to watch the Black filled Southern Stand vacate in under 2 minutes flat!!! :D :D :D :D
As for the worst song (Still feels like we're doing your homework you spotty little herbert :D :D ) you can't go past - now sing along -
But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walks 1,000 miles
To fall down at your door
na na na, na na na
na na na, na na na
lika lika lika lika lika la, la, la
na na na, na na na
na na na, na na na
lika lika lika lika lika la, la, la
Try to stop that crazy little mother running through your head for the next couple of days!!!!

Andy - The Waifs aren't country. Country is Yank or Yank wanna-be stuff. Don't know what it is, typically we're too lazy to figure out a name to call it.
Worst song..... that bloody "We are Australia" song. Nationalistic pap. Same people that sing that wrap themselves in an Australian flag marked "made in china" ... Tossers.

I hate it when people ask questions like this!!
It's like being told "Don't think about an elephant", and what happens??? You're thinking about elephants.
Now I've got to live with "Tell Laura I Love Her" stuck in my head until I can replace it with something more tolerable:mad:

Clinton, I hear what you're saying but there is definitely a country influence. Just listening now to 'Sink or Swim', the song about "when I die, bury me in my home town" or somethang, complete with pedal steel guitar is just about pure c&w!!:) And the fact they spend most of their year based in Nashville touring the c&w circuit...
They do it well though! Seen them a couple of times, most recently at the old Empire Theatre in Toowoomba, great concert too.

I'd actually call the Waifs more Australian Contemporary Folk than country. And Im thinking more about their content than their tunes.

Worst song =
= any song played on commercial radio within three years of its release, or that has been on the playlist of commercial radio for 30 or more years.
= any song that falls into the category of 'easy listening'
= any song/album/compilation/group promoted on TV
aaaaaand....if I ever hear another Beatles song, it will be too soon. (cover versions by Leibach excepted, because they seem to really annoy Beatles fans.)
Right, I'm off to listen to some Severed Heads and some Jesus & Mary Chain just to get nasty commercial radio tunes out of my skull!!

Agree, Beatles sux:) Abby road is ok if your in a mellow mood and White Album is the only one i can listen to anytime, they are so over exposed its annoying. But Jesus and Mary Chain kick ass big time. First time i heard Psychocandy it blew me away and i still love it, and ten years later they bought out 'Stoned and Dethroned' became a fav of mine, Shane MacGowan from The Pogues is on that. Must go and slip it in the CD now :)

I quite like the Chain's Automatic, as well.
Psychocandy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus_and_Mary_Chain) + Yum Cha MP3 player + Sennheiser HD212Pro (http://www.dansdata.com/2senns.htm) headphones were my christmas shopping armour last year. All those dopey "and if it snows, we'll have a slaying time tonight" songs played at the shopping centres were making me want to indulge in a bit of slaying myself.
