Hi.

This is the anti post you have all been waiting for.

This wood forum without humour would be sooooooo boring, much like most of the American wood forums are.

If you dont like humourous posts dont read them, or better still join one of the American forums.

Can you imagine a forum without humour? (Im sure you can) I cant.

Just my say, and if you dont like it, stiff.

G'day Ozwinner,

I'm with you. I'm a member of the Apple forum, where I thought I could help people out, but humour is non-existant and nothing can be said against Apple - to do so you are likened to the Devil incarnate.

So I no longer go there to help out, and I come here instead to get help. :)

No, I'm not going to my room! :D

waldo, their wouldnt be 1 single member here that wants humour stopped, that is stupid, and only those with humour issues would think that way. my 2 cents is why is their so many posts here hijacked with the same people over and over trying to out humour each other. it appears to me that they have been here in this forum so long they have lost interest in going over and over the same old basic questions so they either say do a search because its been covered before at length or give a basic answer and then start to swap banter efectivly ending the original topic. im guilty of it, but it seems to be getting worse. keep the fun but just ease up on the silly hikacking:o

Redwood,

I'll hikack m'self before I stop hijacking!!

No it isn't getting worse, it's just that a whole bunch of people have arrived of late, who don't like it!

I picked an old thread more or less at random to show you, this ain't a new phenomenum. At the time this thread kicked off it went for a record three posts before it was hijacked. http://www.woodworkforums.com/showthread.php?t=9180

It wasn't unusual for threads to be hijacked at post #2, and more than once the original poster did that in paragraph two or three anyway. All this "keep on track and be serious" stuff comes up every now and then, but thankfully hasn't caught on.

Note: at all times, the respondants were enjoying themselves, that a bunch of people contributed, that the topic changed a few times, it came back at the end, we learned a bit, and no-one cared. The object was then, and is now HAVE FUN, SHARE WHAT YOU KNOW, LEARN WHAT YOU DON'T. In that order.

Cheers,

P

On the subject of advising people to do a search, on several forums that I haunt you should try posting a question without having done a search first, mate the flames will take your eyebrows off, by comparison we are gentlemen.

One of the forums even has a "Newbies" section, where newcomers can ask any dumb question and be totaly flameproof. It is usually left up to the very very tolerant members to do the replies.

Al, I owe you one old mate.

To those of you that don't like the way things are, then maybe you haven't had one of those wake up calls that very forcefully tell you that life is meant to be fun, and enjoy it while you can. I hope you never get one of those calls, but I do advise you to expand your tolerance a bit and enjoy life a little more.

I thought that was my point.

I find it ironic to say the least, that people log on to this forum, make all sorts of mushy noise about how they love our attitude and sense of humour, then after a week or two get sick of it and start complaining.

What bugs me about the vocal anti search brigade is that they expect that the older and more knowledgeable members should repeat the same answers to the same questions time and again just to help some newbie who doesn't search the forum first.

When I want some information I do my research. This usually involves checking my local libraries, asking tradesmen on building sites (if applicable), searching this and other boards and finally asking a question here. I then consider all the information found and decide on how to do something.

The owners of this board make this search easy by providing the search option and they want you to use it for Neil himself has posted that people should do a search. ( Do a search to find where.:D ).

Instead some newbie comes on and without even bothering to search asks a question notwithstanding that the answer is in a topic dealt with recently. Recently a member said that he did a search and it threw up so many results that he couldn't be bothered to read them and said that it was easier to re ask the question.

From this I infer that he considers his time more important than the time of the more knowledgeable members who he expects to search for the answer and repost it. Well IMO he is wrong and is insulting those more knowledgeable members.

Sure I like to help out, but if I know that the answer is in the archives they can spent their own time searching for it and I will continue to ignore those posts. If this upsets the anti search brigade so be it, but I consider my on-line time too valuable to waste on those that won't try to help themselves.

I might live in what is becoming a nanny state but I don't have to become a nanny.

Ny apologies for the serious hijack Al.:D

And if the wall was built by Al it will be built solidly and you won't knock it down.:D

On the substantive issues we have a post by Don ( Get seriously Children ) and this post as a reply by Al. It is difficult to comment as I consider both to be my mate.

After carefully reading both posts I think there is much I agree with. I wholeheartedly agree with Don that our focus should be on woodworking ( and related matters) and that those who never posts on those subjects but on everything else are in the wrong place.

Don Agrees with Al that we should not lose our humour and become like the yankee boards. As Al says it should be fun as well as woodworking. The only question is the degree of fun, and sometimes we do go overboard and should be pulled into line.

This debate has been hijacked by the anti do a search brigade and now individual posters to this debate are being castigated for expressing an opinion based on their postings record. This is again insulting. It is playing the man and not the issue.

Lets not forget that only recently we celebrated with Neil the fact that this board become No 1. Surely that means that we are doing something right. If someone doesn't like our brand of humour, our replies and leaves after a few posts then the were just single enquirers and whatever we say or do would have made no difference.

So if you don't like the replies or the hijacks then excercise your right to select what you want to read. By all means use the Ignore member facility.

So as Termite put it so eloquently "To those of you that don't like the way things are, then maybe you haven't had one of those wake up calls that very forcefully tell you that life is meant to be fun, and enjoy it while you can. I hope you never get one of those calls, but I do advise you to expand your tolerance a bit and enjoy life a little more."

I live with one of those who regularly has this wake up call. My wife is a diabetic and a few days ago so caught an infection that has thrown her diabetes out of kilter with the result that yesterday she had to go to hospital and will be there for a few days.

All I can say is that the humour on the board last night made me laugh, so let it continue.

No, I never said that. You are reading into my comments more than was said.

time and time we see new members say they have been lurking and now have joined and want to ask a silly question:confused: why would they say that? .

The reason they joined whould be to ask a question. Why do they say it is a silly question I don't know. I've never asked them, but I am on record as saying that there is no silly question and have answered some as well.

to me they're not stupid or silly and i have no problem answering instead of being all high and mighty and telling them to do a search.

Agreed that they are not stupid or silly, and if the answer has not been dealt with I have been happy to assist if I can. However if a search would have supplied the answer I refrain from posting and I will happily leave it to you.

this is a forum for new and old just not you older members.

As a newbie to the board perhaps I can add a newbie's view.

Sometimes a question that someone has may appear (to the asker) to be trivial. But the point is that the asker doesn't always know that hence prefaces the question with "this might be a silly question but......"

It might be a silly question but if the level of knowledge is low then how would they know? It seems like a way to say "Look, I don't know a great deal about this, but would appreciate some help".

It is to your collective credit that in most cases the question is answered.

There is a great deal of information here in the heads of quite a few people who have been around a while and obviously know each other quite well. That can be a little intimidating for the thousands of lurkers who dont post.

That said, I think this would be the most approachable board I have used - much in part to the humour and good nature of the participants.:D

But I do agree with Sturdee on the search - it is a valuable tool for discovering a wealth of information (until the inevitable hijack). People contribute out of their goodwill and I for one certainly appreciate that. I consider it more a courtesy to those who do regularly post and help the noobs that a search may not clog the board with repetitive posts. Although for a true newbie perhaps they don't always know the correct terminology to search for. Just a thought.

Cheers all.....
