Hi peoples.
I am after a lump or two of sugar cane so I can grow a bit.
Is it the season to get some?
If so is there anyone who could send me a lump or two with the bits on it that are needed to propigate.
Thanks in advance
Al :)

Do you have the climate in Vic to be able to grow it?

It may not grow 10 foot tall and be productive, but ppl grow bananas here that actualy fruit.
The banana fruit only gets to about 4 inches long. :p
If you protect tropical stuff from the frost it will grow.

you probably could grow a bit of sugar cane but it might not produce much sugar. I think sugar beet suits the cooler climes better.
(yer could make booze outa either type of sugar)

With all the hot air at Al's place, the cane'll probably think it's in Cairns :D

May I suggest you find something else? I grew up in sugar cane country (I'm from Nambour in Queensland originally, and heading back to Brisbane this week for good :D). Sugar cane has tiny hairs all over it that get into your skin if you brush against it and the hairs are extremely irritating and nigh impossible to get out.

No, I'm just fed up with Sydney. Mostly it's a case of elderly parent syndrome and making the most of life while it's still there.
Thats what Im after.
Why? It isn't annoying enough to act as security, unless the burglars are Queenslanders and know what it is. That would be highly unusal, however, as the traffic in people is firmly running away the southern states northwards. :p:D

Al, I live in Bundaberg, where all the sugar cane grows. Mate, it wont grow in Melbourne. even if it can be persuaded to send out shoots there as soon as they peep through the ground in victoria they will know they have been had as soon as they see it and will drop back straight down again. sugar cane only grows oin gods own country and thats queensland.
But, if you are determined to try, as you know, im coming to melbourne on thursday, i will try and get you a piece (cane that is), if i can get any of my cane-cocky friends to hand one over without laughing too much and if quarantine regulations permit ithttp://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/images/icons/icon14.gif

Maybe you should let the cane farmers in northern NSW know that. :p

Al,
That being the case, you could explain the palms of your hands by shrugging your shoulders and saying you've been carrying sugar cane!
What Doug says old chap!
Why not go looking for some clumps of temperate palms or other varieties of bamboo perhaps? (Keep the bamboo in tubs or you'll be eaten alive by the stuff.)
Cheers,

Quarrantine might be a problem. Best check that out now as the fines are not to be laughed at!

Al,
You can buy them from Asian Grocery Stores in Melb.
Try Victoria St Richmond or Springvale.
Not every store has it, but look and you will find.
As you'd know, protect them from frost, may be plant them next to some solid brick wall for some radiant heat and they should be fine.

Sorry Ozwinner, but hopefully you won't be getting any sugar cane sent to you in a hurry, apart from the fact it probably won't live in Melbourne, there are serious quarantine risks.
I come from a family of cane farmers and nearly keeled over when I read your request.... thinking of the palm leaf beetle and sugar cane smut, legislation was passed in 1993 and 1998 that limited the transportation of sugar cane. (http://www.legislation.qld.gov.au/LEGISLTN/SLS/1993/93SL436.pdf, http://www.legislation.qld.gov.au/LEGISLTN/SLS/1998/98SL237.pdf)
There are signs up along the Bruce Highway, informing people of the risk. Might not seem so bad to the odd tourist, but think of the poor cane farmers (as if the drought is not enough!).
Cheers

Dan, I agree with you that it is essential that we all comply with any quarantine regulations, for the consequences of not complying are horrendous to our farmers, I can't see how the legislation quoted is applicable to bringing sugar cane into Victoria.
Surely even if those pests came here with a cane they wouldn't survive in our climate.
But it is nice to have confirmation of what I've known for a long time in that Queensland is a pest quarantine area.:D :D :D We've been sending our pests there for years, especially in our winter.:p

I, like sugar cane dont need roots.
You just lay it in the dirt with a nodule, and away it goes.

Methinks sugar cane only grows so well in those areas because of all the bovine fertiliser :D
Hang on, that'd make Melbourne a perfect place:p
