A friend of mine wants to build a timber deck over the top of a existing slab. Is there a mimimum distance between the underside of joists and the top of the slab that has to be maintaned? or can he just lay down termi-mesh and have the joists sitting on the slab. I suggested keeping a minimum distance of 30mm just for the issue of water sitting up aginst the joists. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi
What about Termimesh, then those gal steel battens they use for roofing iron bolted to the slab.
Then the decking??
Strong and rot proof.

My new extension and deck will be polished concrete. Looks fantastic and water no problem. Bonus is its a passive solar store (North facing glass facade).
Have you considered polishing the concrete?:)

That could be a good idea Ozwinner,
However there is 140 mm between the top of the decking and the top of slab, will the gal steel battons come that high? Are the battons a top hat profile? Also would that mean screwing the decking to the steel battons with tek screws?
Shedhand,
He is not keen on polished concrete cause the slab only covers half the area of the proposed deck. Good idea though

I did a deck for myself a coupla years ago that had minimum clearance to the ground. ( 150mm )
I got some 75x50x6mm steel channel, welded some gal rhs on to it and set it into the ground.
I then cut oregon beams into the web so as that the top of the timber was clear of the top of the steel, then put in spacers so the timber cant move.
Then nailed the decking on top.
Clear as mud.
