 I had Norton bundled with this computer- I couldn't wait to be rid of it. It slows your computer down, and when the subscription expires, is every bit as vexing as a virus infection:mad:
I bot a copy of the locally written Vet on ebay for less than $30.00. It works, and works well. Better than Norton.

Vet for a commercial package, you can buy it onm the net for about $85 & then $42 a year.
AVG for a freebie.

This was discussed just recently.
PC cillin. It's brilliant. Includes spam filter, firewall, anti spyware, anti phishing, and virus scanning.
I got rid of McAfee - it's crap. And I got rid of Norton at work for the same reasons as above.

Yep, I'll second PC cillin. Got a 3-user pack from the software mob on the back of the 'Green Guide', and it worked out to $52 each, as opposed to 'arvey Boreman's $90 or what ever it was.
Never ever had a problem with it, and it is very easy to use..

Mate I asked the same/ similar question recently
http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?t=25450&highlight=anti+virus
From all the advice I recieved here I decided to go with VET
Since I have installed it I have found that I did not need to run adawear but still need Spybot ( you can get this free by typing spybot in Google and getting the download), The other thing I like about VET is that you can isolate all internet activity with a simple press of a mouse button and re-engage just as easily , good for the likes of me who leave their computer on 24/7 on broadband.
I am still in the teething stage but so far so good , far better than not-ons
I should also add I got the internet Security Suite not just the anti virus program something I would strongly advise

I've found AVG to be OK. Can't beat the price. It does automatic updates ever time I fire up the computer. Also use Ad Aware & Spybot.

PCkillin.
Be aware, they charged me twice last year on a web download and I was unable to communicate with them to negotiate a return, Visa eventually refunded me the overcharge as a gesture of goodwill.
My neighbour had a similar problem with them last week, download on the web went wrong and no way to correspond, and went and purchased another product from a retail outfit.
The download I think is around 28mb plus and my connection went down and used a web manager "flash get", the next time I went in they charged me again although I had paid for repeat downloads.
So my view these days is not to buy anything on the web that does not have a contact address and telephone number. If contact address is evident check it out first with a silly question.

I agree about the online purchases/renewal/download. I got stung by Mcaffee a year or so ago. I eventually got the refund from Visa, but what a drama.
Same on ebay...anything big, I get a name, address and phone number and verify it before sending money.

I've just swapped from Norton to AVG, seems Ok so far. I'm still getting used to it, but it seems to be updating the signatures and scanning automatically like a good boy.

I have a wireless home network - an IBM Netvista P3, a new HP nc8000 and a Toshiba Satellite. All run XP Pro. All are protected by Norton AV and Zone Alarm Pro firewall. Have been for 5 years. Both update automatically (as does Win XP) on all 'puters.
I've never had a virus or worms or any other bug for that matter. When they expire I renew on line with no hassles at all. I get plenty of expiry warnings.
All 3 computers are on 24/7 as is my high speed broadband. All of them have a programmed full system scan at 1.00am every Saturday. Zone Alarm has a big red button which instantly stops all net activity.
They're my favourites and the tech support is brilliant.
My ten penneth worth. :)
