Can you buff out Hardwax Oil gloss finish to a satin sheen using wire wool and wax as you would with shellac?. I know you can buy Satin Hardwax Oil but I'd like more control over the level of sheen, plus it gives a more even sheen.

Hi Sam . Are you putting a shine on your latest project? Ive been wondering what your next post on that will be.
I cant answer in regards to Hardwax oil . The only thing Ive used that may be close is Osmo , satin I think. That gave an amazing dull look straight from the can. Very nice but I didn't stick with it because I age stuff and it didn't suit that.
You may have a good way already of doing this.
This is the way I do it. If I'm wanting the most dull even nice shine.
When it comes to buffing a finish with wire wool, as you probably remember the best wool is 0000 Liberon. Are you using that?
Liberon - Steel Wool 0000 250g - 15066 | eBay (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/182306052431?chn=ps&_ul=AU&_trkparms=ispr%3D1&amdata=enc%3A1aB2p7zsATLaJ-tgtZ1muTg18&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=705-139619-5960-0&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=182306052431&targetid=1598469861598&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=20040&poi=&campaignid=19657035767&mkgroupid=143201283022&rlsatarget=pla-1598469861598&abcId=9305369&merchantid=263024973&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwt-OwBhBnEiwAgwzrUvkcTFKGOW751tDHEytO7iGHovy8XCCbfs4n6dmy2hia6xEePTRI_RoCFzgQAvD_BwE)
And the way I like to do it is rub a coat of linseed oil and turps 30 to 70 mix over the surface with a rag. Wet it down basically. Then dab a 10c piece worth of wax every 300 or 400mm. Then buff in straight lines with even pressure with a pad of 0000 going over it 5 or 6 times evenly overlapping each stroke. letting the dabs of wax blending with the OT. Then you buff that off with a dry rag. This gives just the right amount of wax and doesn't waste it either.

Hey Rob!, Have a look at my thread on the coffee table as I've made several new posts and updates on it you may have missed. I think WWF have had some problems as I'm not getting much response from the coffee table build thread: A Coffee Table With A Twist (https://www.woodworkforums.com/f187/coffee-table-twist-249212)

I do like the Hardwax oil but I'd really like more control over the sheen, thats why I'm seeking an answer to buffing HWO with wirewool and wax as you would with Shellac. Through a few experiments I have found that you can apply HWO over Dye stain without a problem and doesn't lift the stain much, so I guess thats a plus.

Its lovely stuff, I have a huge roll of the stuff as recommended by you :U

Thanks for the info here Rob, I haven't been doing it this way but will be in the future!.
