WOODIES' JOKES Heard a good joke about woodworking lately? Seen a good comic strip? Maybe know a tall tale or two that can even be true? Let's hear it from you.
Then again, see "I say potatoes and you say potato's" (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,923-1982324,00.html) and "Grammar Puss" (http://pinker.wjh.harvard.edu/articles/media/1994_01_24_thenewrepublic.html)

Clearly that last line is wrong, the sentence is addressing the group, plural, so should be 'Let's hear it from youse'.

REG:
You want to have babies?!
LORETTA:
It's every man's right to have babies if he wants them.
REG:
But... you can't have babies.
LORETTA:
Don't you oppress me.
REG:
I'm not oppressing you, Stan. You haven't got a womb! Where's the foetus going to gestate?! You going to keep it in a box?!
LORETTA:
[crying]
JUDITH:
Here! I-- I've got an idea. Suppose you agree that he can't actually have babies, not having a womb, which is nobody's fault, not even the Romans', but that he can have the right to have babies.
FRANCIS:
Good idea, Judith. We shall fight the oppressors for your right to have babies, brother. Sister. Sorry.
REG:
What's the point?
FRANCIS:
What?
REG:
What's the point of fighting for his right to have babies when he can't have babies?!
FRANCIS:
It is symbolic of our struggle against oppression.
REG:
Symbolic of his struggle against reality.

The aqueduct.
REG:
Oh. Yeah, yeah. They did give us that. Uh, that's true. Yeah.
COMMANDO #3:
And the sanitation.
LORETTA:
Oh, yeah, the sanitation, Reg. Remember what the city used to be like?
REG:
Yeah. All right. I'll grant you the aqueduct and the sanitation are two things that the Romans have done.
MATTHIAS:
And the roads.
REG:
Well, yeah. Obviously the roads. I mean, the roads go without saying, don't they? But apart from the sanitation, the aqueduct, and the roads--
COMMANDO:
Irrigation.
XERXES:
Medicine.
COMMANDOS:
Huh? Heh? Huh...
COMMANDO #2:
Education.
COMMANDOS:
Ohh...
REG:
Yeah, yeah. All right. Fair enough.
COMMANDO #1:
And the wine.
COMMANDOS:
Oh, yes. Yeah...
FRANCIS:
Yeah. Yeah, that's something we'd really miss, Reg, if the Romans left. Huh.
COMMANDO:
Public baths.
LORETTA:
And it's safe to walk in the streets at night now, Reg.
FRANCIS:
Yeah, they certainly know how to keep order. Let's face it. They're the only ones who could in a place like this.
COMMANDOS:
Hehh, heh. Heh heh heh heh heh heh heh.
REG:
All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?
XERXES:
Brought peace.
REG:
Oh. Peace? Shut up!

Nah Grammar is wrong (not Grampa)
"so I therefore proclaim myself the winner"
or "and therefore, I proclaim"
What I hate about English is the debateable rules, lol Maths is pure!
silentC
20th January 2006, 09:29 AM
I disagree, there is nothing at all wrong with "so therefore I proclaim myself ..."
If anything, it could use a comma between "therefore" and "I" but it is optional.
However, I was referring to my first post to this thread which, as I have said, contains neither spelling, grammar, nor punctuation errors - none of my making anyway. :p

You're first post was an ostensible correction to my first post, which you admitted in a subsequent post was incomplete and did not correct all the mistakes of my punctuation.
I therefore assert that your first post contained punctuation errors and hence fails to qualify for the first error-free post in this thread.
It also contains the non-sentence ":D", which is therefore a grammatical error.
:)

20th January 2006, 04:03 PM
I not that the forum content statement has been updated, but still omits a possessive apostrophe, has a word capitalised, and has a full-stop instead of a question mark for the implied interrogative.

Ah, but the errors were quoted verbatim. My only mistake was in not surrounding them in quotation marks and inserting [sic] in the appropriate places. The quote block formatting substitutes for quotation marks on this forum and the insertion of [sic] is an editorial convention, not a rule of grammar, so therefore, I'm the winner and nyah nyah to you.
You know I'm right. :p
zenwood
20th January 2006, 04:37 PM
Nice try, Silent, but as the pic shows, the errors were not quoted verbatim: you corrected my "your" to "you're", hence your correction was only partial, and contained uncorrected errrs.
And you didn't address the non-grammatical ":D".
