so, screw through the reveal into the studs, then putty up the holes OR screw through the studs into the outside of the reveal so don't have to putty anything. Is there a correct method when installing new windows?

On my larger windows I screwed through the reveal and fitted Tas Oak plugs into the countersunk holes. Looks good. They were varnished, so filler would have looked dodgy. The smaller windows I pre-drilled the reveal and drove 100mm nails through. I used filler on those. My house has double studs either side of the windows, so I would have needed 125mm long screws to screw through them into the windows. 100mm screws would have been too short and 150mm too long.

i want to go in through the stud into the outside of the reveal because i hate filling holes. hoping that its okay to do it that way.

If they are the usual 20mm thick reveals then you will get far more holding power going through the reveal into the stud.
