I find the reno topic very useful. It would be more impressive if it had it's own major heading with subheadings. Much easier to find stuff as well. It's gettin pretty big.

OK - I'm not opposed to doing anything that might make it easier for people to use these forums. However I don't have time to mess about trying to figure out what sort of sub headings to put in a forum I hardly ever see. Nor do I and the others have the time to sort out such a thing from scratch it will be a pretty big job.

What sort of sub headings do you suggest to make it easier to find specific postings?

Are you (or some anyone else) prepared to volunteer to moderate these new forums to get them initially in order then to keep them in line and lessen the already heavy and mostly thankless workload of and other Admins/Moderatrors.

Cheers - Neil :)

While you are thinking about it Neil, how about a specific forum for hijacked posts.
People could put them in there in the first instance so that they wouldn't need to be moved when they were hijacked. Seems to make a great deal of sense to me. (which is a worry in itself)

I humbly offer my illustrious services as the Hijacked Posts Forum moderator. :D

Go on, live on the edge for a while :)

Do I get a chopping instrument, a hatchet maybe so I could work up to an axe??

Each moderator has their own axe. It's just that some have a very big one and others a smaller one that needs a bit of sharpening. But all can wield them when required. Often with very striking results.

For suggestions for sub heading, You could start with a basic inside or outside reno work. I would consider helping to organise and mod the forum as I plenty os time on my hands at the moment (I am not working anymore studying part time at uni) and have renovated a house before. Would probably need to know what is expected / required first though.

Maybe I could start with a whittleing knife, or a pointy stick.

I'd suggest subheadings of:
Siteworks (earthmoving etc)
Demolition
Brickwork
Concrete
Timber framing
Steel framing
Cladding

Linings/second fix (ie plasterboard & villaboard & setting thereof, architraves, doors etc)
Cabinets
Plumbing
Electrical
Auxilliaries (Aircon, Aerials, Stereo & TV wiring etc etc)

Maybe too many?? but possibly easier for moderators to have more categories, certainly for users. Or possibly lump services together:

Services (water, gas, electrical, aircon, TV etc)

Or:

Structural
Services
cladding, lining & painting
joinery (cabinets, windows, doors)

I'd put my hand up, but I've really got waaaay too much on my plate as it is :(

I could ditch the foil outfit and do it nude.

Flooring and Decking could be lumped together, they seem to be popular sugjects.

Perhaps we could segregate the jokes forum first - "Good Jokes" & "Bad Jokes". The ammount of lack luster jokes that I have to read to get to a good one is getting out of hand...:(

Agreed, most are not even worth looking at.

If only there was a way to exclude the jokes section from the new posts button. Would save cluttering up the search results.

Since I mentioned it I dont mind doing it...

That is sorting out the subtopics with help of others and moving the posts into each.

I'm a network admin so I can be trusted not to stuff it up and dont mind giving the webmaster my credentials.

Are you going to go through every thread in the Home Reno forum and categorise them?

Start with moving this one to the jokes section - funniest thing I've read in ages.

I realise someone's spent a fair bit of time on this, but was it really necessary and is it such a good idea? I used to check the home reno forum every few days, and it was pretty easy to keep on top of the messages. If you're doing a home reno then most, if not all, of the topics covered by the subheadings are relevant. I don't have time to visit 10 different forums, so unfortunately I won't get to see many of the posts (and consequently won't post as much). The search function made it easy enough to find relevant posts.

Anyway, if everyone else thinks lots of smaller forums is the way to go, then fair enough.

Theremin.

To Theremin - You could subscribe to the Home Renovations Forum and set yourself up to receive daily, weekly or monthly email telling you of new posts in all sections There are easier ways than wading through 10 forums.

Doing it with a heap of subject specific forums will make it easier in the long run to find subject specific posts. The search engine is only as good as the criteria you give it and can easily miss a lot of pertinent posts.

To anyone else who doesn't like it........ Give it a fair go to see how well it works. In 3 months time let us know your feelings about it, and if the overwhelming majority say they hate it and want it back the way it was I will consider doing it.

____________________________________

It has taken a number of people many tedious hours of hard work to get it to where it is now and for the moment I have no intention of undoing all their great work just because a couple of people aren't happy or don't like it.

Every time something is changed on these forums there are 1 or 2 who find fault and complain. Fair enough too (we need constructive criticism from time to time to help us grow) however the other 9,206 members for some reason either don't complain or give accolades and our membership just keeps growing.

"If you build it, they will come." Well we built it and they continue to come. Makes me think that we must be doing something right.

Cheers - Neil :)

No worries, I'm happy to give it a go. Didn't know about the email facility. Was just expressing an opinion which is, after all, what these forums are all about.
