Hi. I was recently given a box of tools. Some appear to relate to Lino carving or block printing or leatherwork. Others I can’t identify.

What were these used for and why are they so common? I’m thinking sewing up sacks (burlap or other coarse weave)

There are a number of these odd little punches. Note the fixed collar near the tip.

These are for punching decorative stamps into something. Although they are a tough nylon I can’t see them as useful on something as dense as Lino, wood or leather? I think maybe leather would be the best bet but I can’t find anything on google and if I don’t think avsaddler or similar would mess around with plastic punches ??

I know these are essentially files, but what trade would use these. There are many in the box but only a few grits. I’m thinking cobbler or saddler maybe?

Finally, these look like leather working edge bevel lens to me. Were they used by any other trade perhaps??

Thanks for looking

Arron,
those look to be tools for lifting upholstery (sp?) tacks.

edit
but I will defer to China

The punches with the collars I think are for fixing small eyelets.

ian 110% edge bevellers and yes chief, I should have been more specific they are eyelet punches.

I think those in the 2nd photo are punches for setting metal eyelets. The collar splays the revers of the eyelet.

Yep, the punches came in a box with bags of rivets, so I guess I should of realised that.

How exactly was the upholstery bodkin used ?

Depending on the size Bodkin is used to stuff stitched furniture coverings and car seat covers, smaller ones are used for deep buttoning like you see on lounge suits etc.
