Can anyone help?. Would applying shellac over Rustins Wood Dye lift the dye?. As I understand it Rustins Wood Dye is white spirit based but unsure if it would lift the colour when french polishing?.

Really appreciate any help.

Rustins make a Sanding Sealer which is just shellac and alcohol. They say it can be used over their stain so other shellac should be the same. See Shellac Sanding Sealer | Rustins (https://www.rustins.ltd/rustins/our-products/indoor/shellac-sanding-sealer)

As I understand it Rustins Wood Dye is white spirit based but unsure if it would lift the colour when french polishing?.

From the product's PDS:

"Can be used under all Rustins wood finishes, such as Quick Drying Varnish, Polyurethane Varnish, Plastic Coating, Danish Oil, Teak Oil, French Polish/Shellac."

Despite being called Wood Dye, the PDS says it is actually a pigment stain. Which probably explains why it can be used under a variety of finishes.
