Just remember ......if you hurt them they can sue.
If, because you were "in fear of your life", you kill them.....then it's your word against theirs.
Or so I have been told by someone who should know. ;)

Personally, I've always found this quite effective.

You're perfectly correct, of course, however under the current legislation it may be a tad difficult to purchase.

Firstly, I'd point out that the person illustrated on Doublejay's link has no idea how to use a shield - depending on what the centre 'pad' is made of, he'll either break his arm or drop the shield IF he can manage to block an incoming blow - he's also not holding it in a vaguely useful position, unless someone was trying to kneecap him.
It takes a fair bit of practice with a willing partner to be competent at 'sword & board' fighting - i'd worry about this lad braining himself befdore he go very far.
A better deal is a 12ga shottie (single or double) loaded with blanks - 'Honest your Honour - they was blanks & no one was more surprised than me when they disemboweled him - now I've got gooey bits all through me shag pile carpet.' And you can have one on a class 'A' licence & keep it it an old locker.
