Removing Silicone

gday,

in a moment of madness i put silicone sealant in the shower recess.
it was the mould resistant variety.....only it isnt that resistant to mould.
it had turned from a nice white to a mix of brown and black :eek:

I want to remove it and replace it with polyeurethane sealant.
is there an easy way to do this?

anyone got any tips?

Try metho it "kills" silicone and a sharp blade and scraper, it is a bit time consuming and you'll be off you're face if the room is not well ventilate. BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO CREATE ANY SPARKS, DON'T USE AN ELECTRIC FAN. VENTILATE NATURALLY. I have done it this way a few times and when finished wash well and bleach or better if you can get some peroxide to kill any mould still in the cracks. Use any of these chemicals with appropriate safe practices and clothing as they will burn eye's and skin.

How did you go removing the silicon maglite? I am going to have to do the same soon. Does anyone know if metho and/or the silicon remover is okay to use on the plastic shower walls?

The Selleys silicone remover is very effective, but you want to take safety precautions like glasses/gloves, it is sulphuric acid in a gel. I would spot test for a few hours any surface like plastic/alum that you might fear marked.
The antifungal silicones are pretty good, so the reappearance of mould tells me you have some underlying moisture problem behind the silicone.
