Hi all, I'm a newbie. Great to find this forum and have other like minded folk to learn and be inspired from.
I've done woodwork for many years, but only as a hobby. I've built windows and doors, picture frames, furniture, even a dog ramp recently. I use recycled timber where possible.

I'm at the stage where I want to spend more time on woodwork, build my skills and work on some interesting projects. I am updating my shed and looking for more efficient tools (a planer and thicknesser at the moment if you can advise on). I'm based in the Sutherland Shire in Sydney. Some pics of recent work attached.

Welcome to the forum Dave,
You have come to the right place to advance those woodwork skills. I for one surely have since I came here.

G'Day & Welcome to a top forum "Dave".
There are a stack members in and around Sydney, across NSW plus the rest of Australia and the world.....
You'll find a heap of helpful & knowledgeable blokes & ladies on the forum and for most very willing to assist.
Make sure you show off your handiwork as everyone loves a photo, especially WIP [Work In Progress] photos with build notes.
Enjoy the forum......
Enjoy your woodwork......
Cheers crowie

PS - Very nice selection of your handiwork, they they deserve there own posting thread with more photos of each...

PLUS You're in a great area as there are two top woodworking clubs in the shire.

AND Have a look at the Dewalt DW735 Thicknesser Planer with the upgrade of a Byrd Shelix Cutterhead... TOP MACHINE IMHO!

Great to know I can share some photos and details about my projects - most people I tell fall asleep or find a distraction within the first 5 minutes (non-woodworking people...).

Crowie, can you provide more details on where I can find out about the woodwork clubs in the Shire? What are they / where are they?

Apologies up front if I ask too many questions - I'll look around the forum and familiarise myself over the coming days.

The enemy is the nails - f##ks up steel blades in a permanent way -the very nice -but god awful expensive carbide heads would help (the helical heads I mean - not the nasty skinny full width ones). Have done MUCH of such things and swinging the magnet don't always work. Roof beams are the pick - not just because of size - but of minimal nails and predictable location. floor beams will be FULL of well flooring nails of course & wall studs have both small size and multiple nails.
Metal detector (which I need a better one) is strongly advised.

Welcome to the forum Dave. Hopefully Crowie will forgive me for jumping in here. :) In probably walking distance for you is the Cubby House woodworkers at Oyster Bay - Oyster Bay Cubby House (https://oysterbaycubbyhouse.com.au)

I am a member there, and would love to show you around our facilities. There is also The Shire Woodworkers who have their clubhouse at Lilli Pilli -
Log into Facebook | Facebook (https://m.facebook.com/ShireWoodworking/) Send me a message with your contact details (click on my user name) if you would like to have a chat and arrange to meet at Oyster Bay.

Happy woodworking,
Alan...

I'll add further posts in time.

Thanks for your interest.

Thanks for the recommendation about Oyster Bay Cubby House @Crowie. I went down last Saturday and joined. Fantastic facilities and a great crowd.
