View Full Version : Tail vice/End vice

I've been giving some thought to the new bench that I'm going to build next year. I'm leaning towards a tail vice instead of a single or double screw end vice.
So I thought I'd put it up for the vote. What's your preferred vice configuration?

Not a very controversial topic, I admit. I had hoped for a bit of discussion on it though. I like the tail vice because it puts the screw more or less in line with the dog holes. The twin screw end vice does this too but don't you find it a bit cumbersome having to wind two screws in and out all the time?

Silent, I still prefer to have none. For me the wonderdogs are the way to go. Otherwise, I will probably go for a tail vice but definitely not the Double screw end vice.
Have fun.:)

The screws are linked together with a chain I think.

If I could only have one, I'd go for the tail vice, but my prefered configuration is to have both. Ideally, a double screw end vice, but I have a single screw one and it works fine. I like having a pair of dogs on the end vice in line with 2 rows of dogs along the bench.

I'm like Alex in that I haven't got one but would like one in addition to my single screw vice.
Ryan's comments will be valuable on this topic.

Having the double row of dogs is fine if you're always working on large panels but how do you get on if you just want to clamp something in the front row?
I saw a bench that had two tail vices, one on the front and one on the back. That might be the go. Independant (can clamp non-parallel-sided objects), can use just the front one for small things and both for larger things. Or maybe just a row of holes at the back and a wonderdog-like something for when it's needed.

On my last bench I just had a couple of standard Dawn vices,
one in front and one on the end.

I really like my tail vice and use it every day, but don't have experience with the others. are you going to put a shoulder, or record style frond vise? there have also been times when I wish I had holes in the bench top for those old school cast iron hold downs.

I'm thinking shoulder vice. Reason being that the big limitation with my standard face vice is that if you want to clamp anything through it, you have to clamp at the edge so that you get past the guide bars. It's impossible to get decent clamping then because the jaw racks. I find myself wanting to do that more often than not.
Major, that's the bench. There's a picture of it in The Workbench Book. Might be a bit over the top - but then you can never have too many clamps (or vices). A leg vice or face vice on the spare corner and you would be unstoppable :D
