This old chair had been on a farm outside, next to the back door to put on shoes for decades.
It needs some love so it can go on the other side of the door.

The seat looks to have seen some unspeakable horrors, so it gets a new (old) one.

492510

Just about every joint was nailed and smashed.

The chair was dismantled.

492516

I needed to add floating tenons to most parts.

Cleaned up the remaining joints.

One front leg was slightly shorter than the other (3/4"). I didn't want to shorten the longer leg as it was already worn down.
I turned a dowel from the short tip, glued on a block of cedar and turned a new tip.

This is where I'm up to.
Clean the parts, glue everything together and then polish.

I'll post some more pics when I get some more done.

Cheers,
Stu

Good job , love to see those items reused. Simple but elegant and once restored will probably provide a comfortable rest spot for many years to come.
Hope you remember where each nail goes😁

The chair is pretty much finished.
It needs a few more coats of polish to call it done.

Here's a few more WIP pics.

The shaped seat before and after clean-up.

Final glue-ups.

Lots of floating tenons as seen from underneath. Also a tooled mark under the front rail.
Not sure what it means. Maybe just marking it as part of a set originally.

Here's a sneak peek of the Cedar on the back.
A few more coats of shellac will really make it pop.

I'll post a pic of the finished chair soon :U
