I am having a christmas BBQ (sausage sizzle) for a few people on the weekend. I am expecting approximately 40 adults and 20 children. Does anyone have a rule of thumb or recommendation for how many sausages I should buy. I dont want to run short and I dont want a freezer full of sausages left over either.
It is sausages, onion and rolls only. (no meat and salad etc).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do a search.:D
Seriously, I think 120 sounds right. 20 for the kids and 100 for the adaults.:)

Talk about opening a can of worms........but that probably wouldn't be enough feed 60 people:D
Are we talking thick sausages or thin sausages? Are we talking 20 males adults and 20 female adults?
My recommendation;
Buy thick sausages, butterfly them and make a decent sanger out of it. Two slices of bread on either side with plenty of onion in the middle.
Each kid might only eat one half of the butterflied sausage or they might want a whole one, depending on their age.
The ladies will probably only have one, maybe two.
Any bloke worth his crust will have at least two, maybe three.
So: 20 kids - perhaps 15 - 20 sausages
20 ladies - 30 sausages
20 blokes - 50 sausages.
Reckon you make it a hundred, then add 15% for crashers or the extra hungry......go 115! You can always freeze the extras or serve them to the family pet.
How many onions do you need for 115 sausages? I reckon about 15 decent size onions'll do it.
Disclaimer: If you follow my suggestion, I refuse to be held accountable for any culinary catastrophes!:D:p:D

And if you can collect the gas you should have enough for your next BBQ. :D

Thin:-
Adults.................3 each
Kids....................2 each
Thick:-
Adults.................2 each
Kids....................1 each
Works out about right,
depending on how long the piece of string is.

I reckon that a question of this magnitude can only effectively be answered by having a poll! :p

Are you suggesting that Tarlox could do the 'loaves and fishes' trick with 'loaves and sausages'??
Well..............'tis the season...:p

You gotta be kidding... if its just sausages and onion in bread the real aussie bloke would go 5-6 easy!

Being a Butcher (of meat not wood) we always said that 2 for adults, (most ladies have only 1) and 1 for the kiddies (what the ladies don't eat is seconds for the others), then with the other munchies, chips and cheese and dips it keeps all happy and drinking add a few extras 12 say and cook these if it looks like they'll all go, if not it's tomorrows brekkie. I've done it this way and it's been good every time, all happy, no waste!...And before anyone says they didn't come back cos' they starved to death on the way home, they did come back and they didn't starve.:p :)

hi Tarlox,
speaking as a former president of a Lions Club, and catering for crowds in that capacity. i would say that if you allow 2 per adult and one per child, up to about 12 years old, that would be enough if they are paying for what they eat, if they arent paying for it add 10 to 20%
from memory there are about 13 sausages per kg so 10 kg should be more than enough - order that and freeze the leftovers. about 18 slices to a loaf - get 7, 2 kg of onions, 2 tubs of margarine and there will be enough and a bit left over for you, but not too much.
have a nice party http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/images/icons/icon14.gif

Thanks for the interest Wongo.
I ended up buying 9kg of thin sausages. (about 130 snags). about 15 medium onions and 7 dozen bread rolls.
It was pretty close to the mark with about 30 snags and 15 rolls left over. Just enough for breaky and lunch the next day.
Thanks to every one for ther input.

Judged it nicely then. The dog should be able to clean up the leftovers and look ill without actually being so :D
