I was just wondering if you guys may know if this Bunnings Panel will take a stain or not. Here's the link:

I really dont want to buy it and find out it doesn't stain well. Now according to the brochure it says its pre-finished with high quality hardwax oil, no idea if you can stain over that?. It also say's it requires regular oiling, painting or staining to maintain appearance and prolong lifespan. All abit confusing for me and the bunnings staff have no clue either as usual.

Hi SadSam71,
The hard wax oil on those panels is to blanket out the light timber from the darker timber. To blend it in is probably the better description. The timber is a hybrid Australian wattle grown in Vietnam. It is very fast growing and milled when fairly small (like 150mm diameter). Wattle is dark brown/golden heartwood with white sapwood. So if you sand the Hard Wax Oil off, what you will see is lots of short pieces of timber all coloured from white through to dark brown. As far as staining goes I cannot help you there. But my son in law made a bar top out of that acacia. He sanded it back and used an estapol to finish. It came up really stunning.

They sell beech and the alpine oak panels which aren't finished. I've used them for a few things and they work quite well.
