Could also be called, "How to PO SWMBO".

SWMBO is an Olympic Gold Medal Shopping champion.
She was complaining that she couldn't find any hand sanitizer as the store shelves were empty. She snickered saying go ahead. Now, I'm a guy and like most guys I don't shop, I just buy. So I went out and bought 4 bottles w/o a problem. SWMBO was rather irritated. "Where did you find these?" was the accusation when I got home. My answer stunned her. It was "STAPLES" the office supply store chain.

Similar here. There's been panic buying of toilet paper, but I had no trouble getting it from one of our sponsors on these forums.

Thats a bit like the dunny in a hotel room we had in Korea. It had an armrest control with more buttons than Capt Kirk's chair on the Enterprise. I was too afraid of the consequences to touch any of them.

We’ve had a small shower hose next to our loo for years as it makes it easier to flush/wash-the Klingons down without a brush. However it’s not all beer and skittles as the reduced use of a pooey brush by the side of the pan is balanced out by water jets of the shower hose atomizing more fecal matter into the air.

I heard this one yesterday.....
Warning!!!! Handling paper notes is a huge risk of picking up the virus. Put any notes into a zip-loc plastic band and get it out of the house as soon a possible. Leave said notes in plastic bag out side at the front door.....I will be a long shortly to collect them.....

I went to South America once. Hiked over the Andes. 6 gruelling weeks of sheer cliffs, up or down, freezing water, freezing mist, snow, no air... but by the gods I had TP.

On TWO occasions I met STUPID Americans. Half dead, starving, under-prepared, big groups, major targets for the Shining Path (a terrorist group there at the time, shot a lot of tourists, but not Aussies! :) ).... they begged... BEGGED for toilet paper and soap.

Offered me BIG money for it.

BEGGED.... pleased... whined like children.

Nope. I kept it.

Such luxury! I felt like the King of France with every wipe. Better than money - I had TP!!!!!

I have been denied my common law rights to panic buy because the local supermarket has run out of toilet paper so who do I complain to. In this day and age there is always someone to complain to, it is another basic right. I tell you, the world is gong to the dogs and I need to complain about that also.

Well you can complain right here.
But just like most places to complain to doesn't mean anyone is taking any notice.
If you want someone to take notice you might need to pay.
Reminds me of the Monty Phyon skit were the bloke pays £5 for an "argument" and ends up with "abuse"

Was in local Woolies about an hour ago and there was a woman asking about TP.
Having overheard most of the conversation, I asked the checkout lady how she was going with the crisis. She said there are always a few customers who she would dearly like to jump the counter and punch as people complained as though it was her fault. Having been in retail, I sympathised with her and we parted with a smile and laugh.

Interesting news item on the ABC interviewing some health guru about the TP situation.

He suggested the Feds could say they have a STPR )Strategic TP Reserve) and post a picture of a big warehouse containing towers of TP rolls.
Of course the Feds don't need to have anything at all but it would be like the possible run on bank funds with the Gov guaranteeing the $$.
A STPR might allay most peoples fears so they won't feel the need to stockpile.
It won't convince the conspiracy prone but it could reduce the paranoia a bit.

Of course then it would something else . . . . .

And ultimately the less you eat the less often you need to go and you'd feel better all round.

Yes I agree. My bro with Bowel Cancer now has to carry TP with him all the time in case he ends up in a loo without any. My mum seems to go through more than average but I think her issue is more psychological but for her it's still real.

STPR sounds like some sort of stock exchange derivative :)

Fair dinkum, those knobs who complain to checkout people need to be taken out the front and put in stocks. Where do people get off, abusing ordinary staff over what is essentially an inconvenience at best.

They should be put on a Do Not Shop list. Facial recognition on entry and DENY sign in red lights up.

Shop somewhere else Karen.....

She is 100.

Naturally, we are more than a bit worried.

The whole thing is shut down. We received an email LAST WEEK about a "flu" and 4 of the 5 areas are quarantined. Nothing unusual with that as gastro and The Bug are a frequent problem. Outside visitors not taking care to keep their snotty kids at home, etc. Turns out its a bit more than that.

This whole thing is ... concerning.

The anger that will be directed towards China and its disastrous response will come at a cost....

With SWMBO suffering from vertigo and not driving and my broken ankle we’ve been using online grocery shopping. The Media talk about the stupidity of herd behaviour on one side of the front page then have a huge headline in the other side saying that “96000 Australians will die” Gee I wonder who is responsible for this panic buying?
We dont use a lot of TP. 18 months on high strength Antibiotics and my bowel is trained and tuned to perfection:)
We were down to the last two rolls yesterday, so after our Thursday night ritual at the food court (great dumplings) we went looking for TP. Coles was empty . Woolies shelves were empty but they had two pallets at the front loaded with TP. Sign said “4 per person”. So here is a so called family of 6 (all looked about 70 with masks on ) with 2 lots each. Wonder if they will be shipping them OS like milk powder?

When I did my first back of the envelope calculation back on SUNDAY I got 125,000!

This comes from if 25% of Aussies get it, and 2% of those die then its 25,000,000 x 0.25 *0.02.

However, it's more nuanced that that.

Most people wouldn't know that about 160,000 Aussies a year currently die anyway and 89% of these (142,000) are above 60

Likewise COVID19 preferentially kills off older people especially those with existing medical conditions and many of were going to die anyway.
So for back of the envelope calcs its easier to stick to those over 60 as that's where 92% of the COVID19 deaths are currently.

The numbers that will die again depend on; those who catch it and the ageVdeathrate profile

If everyone above 60 catches it, based on the current death rate for COVID19 across the age profile I worked out 358,000 people will die :oo:

A 50% catch rate will result in 179000 deaths and 25% catch rate will be 89500 deaths - I reckon that's where the 96,000 number comes from.

More nuancing, people above 80 are going to be more likely to catch it, those between 70-80 will be less likely to catch it etc
As there are fewer people in the higher age ranges the deaths rates should be lower than this.

Lets look at the sane 25% catch rates for all ages ranges causing the 89500 deaths above 60.
Remember 142000 people above 60 were going to die any way.
Then it comes down to the cross over between the 142,000 who were going to die anyway and the 89500 who die from COVID19
This number has been estimated at 75%!! so thats additional deaths of 25% of 89500 = 22,400 ADDITIONAL Deaths from COVID for people above 60

Still too many in my book and why reducing spread rates makes a lot of sense

This is a very interesting (possibly scary) web page.

Experience (https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/685d0ace521648f8a5beeeee1b9125cd)

It shows the number of COVID19 cases and deaths by country .
On the lower left slick the large grey button till it shows up "Cumulative cases' and you can see how the # of cases changes in each country over time.
It's about a day or so behind real numbers but it's still good enough to show trends.

China shows it looks like it has peaked out ,as has the Cruise Ship Diamond Princess which even its finite size is what one might expect.
All the other countries are still in the process of peaking.
Some look like they are slowing down others are climbing rapidly.

Australia looked like it was holding for a while but then it took off again. WHY?
Could have been a plane load of XYZs or . . . . ..

One U-Tube channel I've been following since the early days is by Med Cram. I like it because it clearly describes what's happening, from the medical point of view, without the hyperbole of public media.

The latest clip (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YI2tOoVVpk) is interesting, for two reasons.

1. Apparently there are two variants and at a glance at the figures it's the less severe one that is more contagious.

2. It provides a list of the US "EPA's Registered Antimicrobial Products for Use Against Novel Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, the Cause of COVID-19."

AFAICT, toilet paper is not on the list. ;)

One of the TP manufacturers has stated that while they will work hard to restock shelves they won't be going all out and paying heaps of overtime, because when the crisis is over, no-one is going to buy TP for months.

Aye. It's just as new to the experts as it is to us, hence the constant revisions of the mortality percentile, etc.

One of the reasons I like the channel I linked to is that they offer that research paper as 'amongst new research' without making any judgement calls. From what I've seen, "many experts disagree" applies to every new research paper I've come across in any field.
