Hi,
I'm currently restoring and old rocking chair that my brother and I bought for my mum way back in 1967. I've taken it completely apart and have got it back to bare wood after removing all of the old crappy varnish and stain. My mother doesn't need a rocking chair where she is now, so when finished it will live on my west facing back verandah. I need to choose a durable stain and finish, but don't know which would be most suitable. I've done some web searching but most results you get are for deck oils.

This is a nice piece of furniture and I'd like to protect it as best I can by using the right product. I was thinking of using an oil based stain, but what finish should I use? Is a Tung oil finish recommended in this situation or should I go for a spar varnish or polyurethane finish ? Or is there something better?

Thanks.

Outdoor furniture oil. Most hardware places will have it. Get an oil based product not water based and just follow the instructions. Easy to apply and easy to touch up at a later date when required.

Thanks for the reply. The problem with those oils is a lot of them use linseed oil and they have driers and colouring dyes and god knows what else added to them, so the actual oil content is reduced, and they need re-doing in a couple of years.

I was hoping someone would have a special recipe of their own that they swear by. I found one such recipe in another thread on this forum but don't know if it suits my situation-

30% Pure Raw Tung Oil
40% Clear Satin Polyurethane
30% Mineral Turps

I might mix some up and and give it a trial run first.

Cheers.
