Are you a clean freak?

As you can see by the pics, I make sawdust and mess.

I only have a very small shed so it's pretty much essential that I keep it tidy.

I usually clean it up after finishing a project, however it can get pretty untidy during the process.

I don't think I fit any of the poll options though as I certainly wouldn't call it spotless even after I've cleaned it up.

Geez Bob, rattled me for a moment, thought someone had taken some pics in my shed
Even down to the GMC shop vac box (just bought a ROC 50) and the drum sander

  I couldn't work in that mess Bob :D :D

Mine isn't like Major's and some of the other clean freaks we see on here either (unfortunately). But I have to start a new project with a clean shop and a tidy bench. I clean up once a week usually. I don't mind the dust around a bit and the current job in bits all over the bench but boxes and timber piled everywhere, no, not here. It reminds me too much of my son's bedroom. :D

Are you a clean freak?

Bob,

Whilst I'm not a clean freak I must say that my chook shed and run is cleaner than your workshop. :D

I could never work in a shop where there is so much mess. So when ever I get in the shop I first put away up to 10 things that are out of place. This way it stays clean and organised.

Now that you mention it some chooks would go well in there, no sawdust then just manure for the garden :D :D

Today I dropped the spring washer off the tiny screw that holds a router bearing on,

and guess what,

Its lost forever.

None of the options apply.

I have a very small shop, and it doesn't take much before the place is looking fairly untidy. However, I try to put every tool back as I use it, or at the end of a shop session. As for sawdust, I clean that up daily. The finer stuff, that forms a layer of minute powder over the surface of everything, get cleaned up about once a week. :)

If you take a couple of inches out of the DC hose thats kinked, Im sure youll get better suction.

Now in my shop I would look down at the floor, see it, pick it up and continue working. :D

BTW have you tried finding it with a strong magnet, the magnetic base of my micro meter is great for picking up small bits of metal, like screws and nails.

I lost outside while having a cuppa.
Its only a spring washer so its not a problem
Must get some new cutter bearings though.

I guess you could call me a clean freak... if someone cleans, I freak! Mine's a working shop 7 days a week and sadly makes Martrix's shed look vacant. :o This is 'cos it is a working shop, one that should really have 4 times the floor space it has. It was a four-car garage, they're now out on the street and in the drive. I s'pose I should build a car-port. One day. When I get a round tuit.

My timber racks overfloweth, mainly with ply, MDF & crapiata [sigh] although there's a large area with logs I gotta move out to the curing shed once I get around to rebuilding it. As it is, one can barely see the floor for stored timber. I literally work on it! At least I know my floors are always clean... it's the timber that gets dirty. My workbenches also overfloweth, with tools stacked on tools. There's method to my madness though, frequently used tools are stacked on top of lesser used, in the area where they are used. So, if someone "cleans up" (which is really just rearranging the mess to suit their taste) and moves one elsewhere...

Generally I build in the shop, then go out and install. The last thing I want to do at the end of a hard day is go home and clean. Weekends are spent either on catching up with the work I didn't manage during the week or on some "me" time building stuff just for the enjoyment of it. Again, cleaning's not high priority.

This is changing as I'm runnning duct-work, etc and slowly revamping the shop from one end to the other, adding cabinets and the like... but I ain't holding my breath. Maybe one day when it's clean to see at least part of the floor I'll post some pix. Again, I ain't holding my breath.

Think I'm exaggerating? Where's Waldo? I think he found his way out after his last visit... or is that him camping under my bench? ;)

Im on the closer side of errr spottless... if I've had a full day in the workshop I tend to just shut the door... but next morning it gets cleaned(tools/offcuts) before starting again. Always sweep up everyday tho

BTW, the triton TS doesn't belong there. That's just where 'twas stowed when the ute was unpacked last night!

Glad to see I'm not the only messy bugger according to the poll but I doubt if anyones shed is as unorganised as mine . I do try though . Actually from all the photos posted I reckon your all a bunch of liars !! Your sheds always look clean , neat and tidy . How can you judge a messy shed until you've seen mine ?
Talking of spiders etc the worst that happened to me was when I opened the shed door and a tiger snake fell straight down onto my blunstones before he slithered off . Almost had to change my undies .

I've got a messy workshed. Shaving everywhere. Like to keep it organised a little though. And as long as there is a good path to walk through I'm happy.

Anyway, where else ya gonna hide ya playboys anyway. For that, a messy shed's a must. Major, bet with that clean shed of yours, you don't have any playboys to hide. More like a 'laboratory' or an 'office',,,,,not a shed. Stop being to clean for christs sake.

Major, how'd you find those Record shifting clamps your using on that chair glue-up ? Work ok for you ? I've got a couple like that. But, they always slip on me.

I gotta admit, I HATE stuff on the floor cause I'm usually in bare feet in the workshop & I hate walking in crap. http://www.ubeaut.biz/zonked.gif

Well, if thats crap, offload some of it on me. I'll ease that burden:D...some nice tools in that office, Major. So, if you've got 'crap' everwhere, where do you hide you playboys ? or is it just 'playboy' or is it 'penthouses'......under the jointer ?

I agree it can get too much. I've got so much built up plane shavings that I've got rats. A whole family. And they don't like cheese. They like expensive buffing compound. The bastards  .....And it ant fun looking for small parts when they fall in the mess.

Like some, I am somewhere in between not really a sty and not a spotless display "Workshop". I find walking on a messy floor kills my feet so I clean each day. As far as organising, I enjoy wood and metal and the two can be a bad combination as a fire risk so thats another reason. But I have a lot of "treasure", carefully stored for future projects, I laugh at mates when they say "Jeez ya got a lot of crape in here" I come straight back at them and say "Yeah! funny I'm going to use some of it to fix this problem you want me to try and fix for you" usually shut's 'em up.savage(Eric):p

I don't think of myself as a "clean freak" but I can't stand clutter.

It distracts me and shytes me to tears :(

It's the same at work. Some blokes can work with their desks covered with the last three years worth of crap.

I don't know how they do it.

I guess it's just a case of "whatever works for you" works.

I know how that goes!

The more observant will notice a couple of (nearly) empty shelves in my shop. Until the other week (we had a hard-garbage collection...) they held some 15 odd 'putas and a few monitors, the last vestige of my "programmer with a screwdriver" days. :D A couple of VAXs, some Sun Sparcstations and the rest were '486 thru to P2's. They were my spare parts supply to fix the computers of the people who hung it on me for keeping old crap in the shop.

Now they can all take a flying... I gots me some more wood storage! :p

They need to look at the pics at the start of this thread to see a real mess !!!

Mine is a mess whilst working on a project, but generally I have a clean up between jobs.

Mind you I have been working in my display unit for over 3 months now with the odd wood-turn in between. Couldn't even see the benches. I had to clean the workshop up yesterday for the BBQ/swap meet next weekend. Even so, there are panel glue-ups every where.

My Yellowtail is currently on her back, getting her bottom soundly sanded - for those with evil minds, the howl of the sander drowns the howls of pain from the boat  As a result, my entire shed, all its contents, most of the backyard and half the neighbourhood are covered in a fine layer of dust. The really interesting part of this is that all the spider webs have picked up the dust and the shed now looks really cool (hey, I am a horror writer) :D

Hi there,
I couldn't work in a complete mess, just have to be organised so I can lay my hands on whatever I need at that moment, but generally my shed is messy during a project. Then I have a cleaning frenzy, before I start messing it up again! Dust, shavings and off-cuts are generally there for the longest, its the tools, supplies, and spare pieces that need get the most attention...the essential things to get on with next project.

Cheers for now,

Andy Mac,

I'm the same Nothing gets cleaned or organised during a project and then I get all enthused to do a complete reorganisation of the shed. I convince myself that reason I made all those mistakes was because I'm not organised and I dont have enough tools!

My shop is like my BBQ. At the end of a session I just leave it as is. Then when I start the next session, the first thing I do is completly clean up, including putting everything away, dust removal and lastly vacuum the floor.

It sound terribly anal when you put it on paper, but it makes for a much more enjoyable experience :).

I had to answer yes. Generally have at least 1 fairly major cleanup each day. I despise clutter.

Another annoyance is not being able to make lots of sawdust while another project is being finished. I need a finishing shed (ain't gonna happen though).

This (http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?t=18081) pic is fairly typical:
