There have been incidents where newspapers have posted the winning numbers before the draw. A small town in Oregon is one that I know of.
As a regular player of the lottery and a home delivery subscriber of The Los Angeles Times for about 40 + years, I have dreamed of the after winning press conference.
ME: Yes, we have time for a couple of questions.
THEM: Inaudible
ME: How are we going to spend the money. Well the transmission in the truck goes rrrrr rrrrr. We'll get the transmission fixed.
THEM: Inaudible
ME: How did I pick the numbers. As journalists, you are aware that there are stores where it is possible to buy the Sunday Los Angeles Times on Saturday. We have subscribed to The Los Angeles Times home delivery for over 40 years. Occasionally, home delivery messes up and delivers tomorrow's paper today. This happens perhaps once every couple of years. I just took the published numbers and played them.
If nothing else the daily circulation of The Los Angeles Times should double overnight. :)

There was a comparison of superfund returns a few years back and one that was close to the bottom of the list was a superfund for employees in racing and gaming businesses.

The only ones making money out of horse or dog racing are the sp bookies and the fixers

Growing up in Brooklyn, New York I had a bookie as a teenager. The smallest bets he would take was $0.25. Two or three weeks into the season I would look at his spread on the NFL (American Football) games and pick one to bet on. In most cases I would beat the spread and collect. It got so that he would bring the spread by on Tuesday (For Sunday games) and then change the spread on the game that I chose. He did give me a piece of advice that I have followed for at least 60 years. "You can't beat the house and the only way to beat the ponies is with a whip."

I used to work for a bloke that was into the trotters, he'd tell me which to back, which I did, and it came in first.
Trouble was, it was the next race!!!!!
