Hi there

We're going to be completing an update of the forum software and various plugins tomorrow night from 7:30pm EST. I expect it to take approx. 2 hrs to complete.

If you notice something not working as expected, please post in this thread.

Thanks guys

Hey Doug

I haven't run the software update yet. Can we re-visit this once it's been run?

Hi there

I'm going to have to back out of doing this tonight, a slow connection to the servers has meant preparing has taken too long. Will re-attempt tomorrow night.

Sorry!

Yeah I guess that will be ok.

Not being able to post photos is a bit of a bummer but it is what it is.

The frustrating thing was getting back that ability for about five minutes then it vanished again as mysteriously as it did the first time.

good luck with the update.

About that slow server connection.... Is the update likely to improve response times or have the hamsters who power it unionised and taken up strike action over pay and conditions?:p

Hi Steven,

Just updating my situation for the purposes of "revisiting" after the update.

I have managed to stop my computer automatically trying to use HTTPS protocol when I load the page, which was a feat in itself - I never tried to get it to do that in the first place but anyway ...

So now I can post pictures and smilies etc like I was able to do in HTTPS for ages. But now I need to log into the forum every time I leave the page idle for a short time, which I have not had to do before. :~

Good luck with the update.

Just updated all my sites using CloudFlare and their FREE HTTPS system.

Better still, it is now caching 50% of all of my traffic. In less than 6 hours Ive saved hundreds of megs, plus a free TLS cert to-boot!

All it took was a DNS change and a few clicks of buttons.

It offers an absolute train load of top-shelf features.

Has the upgrade happened and should we notice anything different? Editing and reporting posts is still slooooooow as molasses

Also, why can I delete posts on MWF but not here? I thought they're on the same platform

Has the upgrade happened and should we notice anything different? Editing and reporting posts is still slooooooow as molasses{

Upgrade hasn't been done yet still waiting for Steven to be able to do it. It's a big job that takes a number of hours to do and getting enough time in one hit is proving a problem.

Shouldn't be a delay in reporting or editing posts. Haven't heard from anyone else with these problems that I can recall. Works fine for me with no noticeable delay that I have noticed.

Also, why can I delete posts on MWF but not here? I thought they're on the same platform

Members can't delete their own posts on here only Admin or moderators can do that and then only if there is a really good reason for a post to be deleted. If we left it to members to delete their own posts there could be pandemonium. as it has happened in the past.

As much as we'd love to say we can trust all our members to do the right thing.... It's an impossibility as this sort of thing has happened before on a number of occasions. Had couple of members come on and slag off other members, religion, products and other things then in mid debate when they were being reprimanded by members they deleted their posts. One (supposedly level headed) member took offense at a comment made and set about deleting all his posts and threads leaving massive holes in threads throughout the forums.

This was in the early years of the forums and is the reason why it is no longer available on here.

It shouldn't be available on MWF either and must have been reset with one of the upgrades.

I'm sure all levelheaded members will see the wisdom behind not allowing own deletions. Can't say that everyone will agree but that's just the way it is to keep the forums running smoothly.

Will take hours to change the permissions on MWF so may not happen for a little while but it will change over there also.

Cheers - Neil :U

Neil,

In regards to reporting posts, it’s after you submit the report, usually takes about a minute till it returns to the thread.

And with deleting, you used to be able to delete your post within the 24hr window after whilst you still had editing options.

elanjacobs
20th May 2019, 01:19 PM

Yeah, that's the deleting I meant. Especially handy for when posting takes so long and you end up posting twice.

FenceFurniture
20th May 2019, 02:34 PM
And with deleting, you used to be able to delete your post within the 24hr window after whilst you still had editing options.Yes, and I can't see the difference between deleting a post and just editing it to delete all the content (good, bad, indifferent, or most likely because of a repeat). It's because there have been so very many duplicate posts in the last 6? months that we are trying to keep the board tidy by deleting the dupes.

What happens is that you hit "Post" or "Submit" and nothing at all happens, so people hit the button again, and it posts up twice. The very eagle eyed :ninja: will notice that after the first hit the button gets a glow around it, which tells you that it did actually register, and your post may appear sometime in the next (up to) 90 seconds.

There are various things (anything) that are, at random, as slow as a wet week. Other times they are as quick as they should be. For example, I can press "New Posts" and it will sit there and fool around for say 10-15 seconds which could become 30-60 seconds, so I press stop ("X") and then "New Posts" again, and they will very often come straight up.

Win 10
High spec machine
Latest Firefox
Decent speed NBN connection

No other website does it.

Just because I can, I'll see if it will do it when I post this.....

Edit: Nup, pressed it twice but because it posted in about 10 seconds it only posted once.

OK, OK, OK....

Just reported Accos' post and it took 3min 55sec to come back to this thread.

First time I've had this happen will get Steven on to it and see if I can't convince him to get the upgrade done post haste.

Can't recall how long deleting posts has been off on here but it's been a fair while as it takes some tome to add or delete that privilege and none of the privileges have been changed for a very long time.

The only ones who have had that privilege have been admins, super mods, mods, librarian, and some special registrations (now all revoked).

I have spent the last few hours doing the following:

I have added 2 new usergroups.... (Senior and Gold Members) and have reinstated the above mentioned privilege to Senior Members (can now delete own posts) and Gold Members (can now delete own posts and threads) both of these will only be available for 1440 minutes (24 hour) after posting. There are a few other privileges associated with these 2 new promotions like number of stored PM's, and a few others that you will have to find for yourselves.

Full Members will be promoted to Senior Members when they've made over 500 posts on the forums.
Senior Members will be promoted to Gold Members when they've made over 1000 posts on the forums.

Those with their own User Titles, eg: ubeaut - (Benevolent Dictator), may not see the user rank of Senior or Gold Member.

Cheers - Neil :U

PS Could take a few hours to a day for these new promotions to show up and work.

Thanks Neil. Just had a look when editing a post. The Check Box for delete is back, and it says "Delete this post in the following manner: Delete message" so I presume there is also a "Delete Thread" button for some people (Gold).

However, my post count is well over 1000 but there was no delete thread option. Maybe it also needs to be put into place for members above Gold Status? (dunno what the post counts are for the various statuses).

Not sure if you know this or not but in this thread (http://www.woodworkforums.com/f17/joke-227905) between posts 18 & 19 the following has appeared:

It appears that the promotions only update after you have logged in and then it could take an hour or so to change anything. Had a look last night and there was only a bout 10 who had been promoted, at 8:00am this morning there were about 40+ and all had logged in 21/05/2019.

Will have a look in Promotions a bit later on and see if there is a problem there with L & T. However it's working for me and I have had a couple of thanks for above post this morning from elanjacobs, homey.

Not sure if you know this or not but in this thread (http://www.woodworkforums.com/f17/joke-227905) between posts 18 & 19 the following has appeared:

The thing you saw between posts will probably be an annoying ad from Infolinks that's displayed to web surfers and is only seen if you aren't logged in.... Bet you weren't logged in. If you were then it needs to be looked at as there may be a problem.

So, I'm going to log out now and see if anything changes when I log back in (like rebooting troublesome tech).

Ok, I started a new thread to test. After the first edit, I then went back into edit and checked "Delete Post". I expected the thread would also be deleted as it would then have no posts in it.

That proved to be the case.

Note that there was no "Delete Thread" option (which is now supposed to be the case for Gold Members, but I suspect that I might be a Diamond member)

FenceFurniture

Yes. I started a new thread and was able to delete immediately. When you edited were there two buttons to choose or just one? (remembering that in a one post thread, deleting the post will also delete the thread).

What I have just noticed in another thread of mine that I just posted into (an old one) was that there was a check box at the bottom left to Close the thread. That was not on edit, it was just in the reply to thread.

I'd say you should ignore it's function on posts you may have read in the past 24 hours. There seems to have been posts lost so I suspect that at some stage forum access was open and then there was a data restore.... I know for me a number of posts I read appeared in the "New Posts" list. There were also ones I commented on that the posts disappeared, so I know that there was some data loss / forum access at some point during the upgrade process, that has caused some questions.

Can you please check to make sure you are still subscribed threads and that there have been posts since you looked at them last.

We have found that over the last few months some servers have been stopping automated emails (which both pm and subscribed are) as spam. Try putting [email protected] on your trusted email list and see if your service provider will do the same.

Poundy I have changed your notifications from daily to instant to see if this makes a difference. elanjacobs I have left yours as it was - instant.

There are many thousands of email that go out from WWF daily, eg: subscribed threads, pm's, registrations, birthdays, contact us, admin notifications, reported posts and more.

If you have another server you can use it would be worth giving a try if the trusted list thing doesn't work.

If you are on Optus or Apple server I believe they were/are blocking emails from Woodwork Forums have a look at this post and the couple after it >CLICK ON ME (http://www.woodworkforums.com/f36/receiving-emails-subscribed-threads-224835#post2140037)< for a bit of info to do with this.

As part of this change you didn't move server IP address did you? I did note you have an SPF record with an IP address listed,
"v=spf1 +a +mx +ip4:209.95.48.51 ~all"
and that seems to match www's IP address, which looks right, assuming the emails originate from the www server and not a secondary one?

Can you please check to make sure you are still subscribed threads and that there have been posts since you looked at them last.

We have found that over the last few months some servers have been stopping automated emails (which both pm and subscribed are) as spam. Try putting [email protected] on your trusted email list and see if your service provider will do the same.

Hope some of this is of help.

Cheers - Neil :U

All my subs are still there and posts have been made, I added webmaster to my whitelist long ago when there was last a bout of no emails. I am still getting all the metalwork forum emails as normal. I'll try switching email addresses to gmail and see if that works.

EDIT: Turns out my gmail is already in use for another account. Not making another email just to get notifications from here

Am not sure if this is this person's post or a new way of showing edited posts.... for example, look at
http://www.woodworkforums.com/f11/break-furniture-228640#post2145983 and you'll see that there's two paragraphs of (almost?) identical text separated with what I am assuming is a forum-added separator line. Just alerting you to the fact, not judging if it's good/bad better/worse etc :)

And thanks for squizzing at email !

and hey presto, here it appears in my post !
I did a quick reply, hit "post quick reply", and then the web page re-posted and I got that phantom "you're leaving the page, think quick" message that has been reported a while ago. I chose "leave" and then this appeared

Edit: and could not repro that this time. The post happened and the ajax magic updated the page and my post without re-posting teh page

I just clicked on NEW POSTS and got a heap of threads from the metal work forum preceding the woodworking posts.

There was another lot of work done on MWF in the last day and those posts will be the RSS feeds from that forum.

They are here because MWF originated from these forums and some on here like to see what's going on over there plus they also draw new people to MWF as well as members from here who wish to join in.

No purpose would be had by having RSS feed from WWF to MWF as it would overwhelm that forum with inappropriate posts.

FWIW MWF is now a secure site on HTTPS instead of http our tests are now shoing that everything seems to be running correctly with members able to see all attachments etc.

This is what will happen on here some time in the very near future after a few hidden hard coded bits have been ironed out. Getting very close now.

Hope this sorts out the problems somewhat.

Cheers - Neil

PS for anyone who has posted and looks for the thread or their post in new posts it won't show up as you have already seen it because you posted it. That thread won't show up again until the next post is done after yours.

Definitely not receiving emails... this is for the instant notifications and IM's.

I've checked my spam and archives. Just letting you know my experience.
