View Full Version : Watcha ya doin in Dooen this time? Australia Day weekend 2019

DaveTTC

Jerilderie Jaunt and Watcha Dooen at Dooen? This is my 6th anniversary and we are shaking things up a little bit. I may be responsible for all cooking ... shock horror.

Sat 26 Jan
Sun27 Jan
Mon28 Jan

Following on from last year, something different. On the Saturday of that the GTG I have opened it up to home educated (home schoolers as some may call them) children. The intent here is for each child to be able to do a short project ranging between 30 - 90 minutes. Kids will range from 5 to their teens. At this stage I have had expressions of interest for more than 40 kids over the period of the day

Your help ... if you are willing to work with a child for a project that would be greatly appreciated. This is a fine oppurtunity to introduce a new generation to the wonders of woodwork. I would ask if possible for those that are willing could you bring what is needed to do projects with 5 to 10 children. If you need to reimbursed cost of materials we can make that known to the parents what each project will cost for materials. You are welcome and invited to bring your own tools and projects. If you do not wish to do a project with a younger person that is fine, you are still welcome for all three days.

If you are unable to assist with a project but happy to work with a young person I will try and some spa projects available.

As usual the rest of the time will be a make up demonstrations and the regular banter. Bring your family too.

That places it a little over 400 km w / sw of the Jerilderie for those who came when it was there.

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/12/17/011471133a2cd06f1c948559c71df397.jpg

It is about 1/2 way between Adelaide and Melbourne on the northern edge of Horsham.

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/12/17/55c252b7c97d7406dcccc9f98a28a0b1.jpg

Not for the faint hearted, the property is still a little rough (though I do have some real grass and it is green) when it comes to living quarters.

There is a shed and will be at least 4 lathes on hand to use. The shed has changed from below.

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/12/17/2e2315084ef279b7c3bead0820d96c27.jpg

For anyone who wants to rough it there is plenty of room for a swag, tent or caravan.

If you want to or can demonstrate anything over the event please let me know either on here or by PM

What will be

show and tell
Buy, swap, sell & give away
A yarn or three
Food, food and more food
Oppurtunity to use or learn on a lathe

Demo's and Lessons
Plans are to have a morning and afternoon demonstration Sunday and Monday. This is seperate to crafting demo's which may appeal mainly to the women.
I hope to have the following same as last year in general terms though specifics may change
1) Production Turning
2) Finishing
3) Box making Incra Jig.
4) Thread Chasing ... has anyone had a go in the year that has lapsed?

Open to other suggestions here above and below

What to bring

Anything for the above
A chair
A wood working project/s to do or show off
Metal working as well if so inclined
Areo guard and a hat
Some of your work

Accommodation

links copied from last year, hopefully still work

Horsham will provide the greatest range and closest accommodation for those who do not wish to rough it. This is a wotif link but feel free to look up locations by other means
https://www.wotif.com/Hotel-Search#daysInFuture=0&stayLength=1&regionId=7742&destination=Horsham,+Victoria,+Australia

Any demos or workshops are more than welcome as would be a lesson on how to use a mill or metal lathe.

Please let us know your level of interest in attending.

Food Similar to last year

Friday night there will be a BBQ for whoever is there was a pleasant evening last year I think we had close to a dozen.

Breakfast

Cereal
Toast
Bacon & Eggs
Baked beans

Lunch

Sandwiches
Rolls
Pies and Pasties
Hot Dogs

Tea

BBQ
Spaghetti Bolognaise
Someone had mentioned they might do fish and chips one evening?

Drinks

Tea
Coffee
Water
Juice
Soft Drink
You are welcome to bring alchol, please drink in moderation and not if you will be using tools

There is a pub virtually next door for any who want to go and get a couner meal (at your own expense). Not encouraging a booze up but likely will be a drink or two in the evening for any who BYO

If you have special dietary needs you can bring your own or let me know and if I can I will accommodate.

If you want to bring anything to contribute to the supplies you are welcome to do so. As some are travelling some distance this is by no means expected.

Life has a way of throwing all sorts of challnges at us. If you cant afford to contribute finacially or with provisions dont be put off, come anyway.

For those who want to donate a few $$ there will be a tin or jar somewhere. I dont need to know who did or didn't donate or how much. Just come and have a good time.

So far I have never been much out of pocket thanks to the generosity of those who do choose to support the event.

Looking forward to another great weekend .

Smoking, I am not a smoker but others are. As for previous years please be mindful of your butts. The big one here is with kids around can we be mindful to avoid smoking around them while we doing a project with them

Does the "change" mean that it's full of tumbleweeds again, Dave?

At this stage Jools and I will be there. I will see what I can come up with for a project for the kids. The mallets seemed to go well last year but something different might be welcome this time.

Hi Dave,

Due to logistics and time constraints, I doubt I will have time and resources to develop a new project for the kids in time for Australia Day so it will be mallets again.

Therefore I can fit two kids on the mobile workbench at a time and run a session before and after lunch, so I can look after four kids, preferably near the upper end of the age group.

How does that sound?

DaveTTC
28th December 2018, 10:47 PM
That will be great, at this stage it seems we will have more kids than last time ... perhaps more than I can handle.

Unfortunately I will be a non starter this year. I have been to Jerrilderee once, and the last 3 at Dooen, but can't be at two places at once this year.
Hope everything goes well, I have thoroughly enjoyed the previous GTG's and hope everyone enjoys this one.
Apparently there will be more than 6 blades of grass this year, something worth seeing!

It’s all combing together nicely. Sorry notifications were playing up.

No more change to those coming from the forum, sadly a number of regulars just can’t make it for a variety of reasons.

Should be a nice manageable number of homeschoolers on the Saturday and hope to have a demo or two on the Sunday and likely Monday before the exodus

For those here earlier I will have a bbq Friday night.

The property has had a major clean externally and just a little more required in the shed which I will get to tonight or tomorrow.

Hottest day at last check was Saturday at 34 and a nice mild 27 for Sunday.

The lawn is green yes shock horror it is in and green, the front is still a baron desolate waste land with the benefit of a tree and a half

Dave, we will be arriving in Horsham after 9pm on Friday so we will go straight to our friends' house and come out to Dooen on Saturday morning.

What time will events be starting?

I have a few mallets prepared for the kids to make up same as last year, so if its ok I will set up under the tree where I was before.

I can fit two kids at the workbench at a time and tools to run a class of two and can run a session before lunch and again after lunch so that would be four kids.

This would suit older kids, say 11 and up as a bit of an attention span is required.

We may have to leave on Sunday but will stay until Monday if our ever-changing circumstances permit.

Looking forward to a great weekend

Probably been broiled! :;

Well not quite broiled, but a few of the photos I wanted to post aren't of share-able quality due to the poor positioning the sun chose for itself despite my repeated requests for it to position itself somewhere more convenient.

I ran a mallet-making workshop similar to the one I ran last year, with two children making mallets in the morning and two more after lunch. Actually one of the morning mallets was made by a dad assisted by his two sons working beside his daughter. The boys were thought to be a bit young to make a mallet by themselves, but spurred on by his experience in the morning one of the boys fronted up in the afternoon and did it by himself.

Here are two of the happy owners of redgum/tassie oak mallets they made on the weekend. Dave and Rachelle's daughter Sammie also made a mallet but her photos were too dark to post. Maybe Dave can arrange a photo of her with her mallet? These kids were aged 7 to 9. I usually run this activity for 11 and up but these kids stayed on task all through the job and are very proud of their efforts. They made splendid mallets.

I think your imagination has run riot Dallas, either the front fence has had some green paint on it quite a few years ago, or there is a bit of foliage from the Peppermint tree overhanging the fence and giving an illusion of grass.
Apparently there was green grass out the back, but without photos I suppose that could just be a rumor.

Grass, or the lack of it aside, looks like it was a successful weekend. The mallets look very professional, well done Doug for helping out.

Hopefully next year won't be as busy for me and I will be able to get down to lovely downtown Dooen.
