Hi,
I subscribed to a couple of threads but have not seen any notifications come through, I checked my email address and that is correct, I sent myself a couple of pm's and they arrived OK but no notifications on new posts.
can anyone suggest what I might be doing wrong or whatever, I use gmail.com for emails.
thanks in advance

Did they (based on content perhaps) end up in your junk mail folder?

No, I check the junk/spam boxes and nothing there.

First thing that comes to mind, is what frequency did you set the notifications to.
Cannot remember the exact frequencies available, but you may have them at weekly.

I set them to daily, but I'll double check that, however it has been more than a week since I set them.
I was hoping that an administrator could check that they are not going to my old email address.

Hello Rob
Can't find a problem. Have reset your notifications to Daily. See how that goes.
Couple of questions:
Not trying to be smart...
But have there been any new posts in the subscribed threads since not receiving notifications?
Have you had any recent upgrades to your computer eg: windows update or similar?
Are you running any blocking programs like adblock, VPS or similar?
Have your spam filters been updated recently either by you or your service provider?
Currently waiting on a forum upgrade to latest version but haven't been able to get it done due to time and space constraints. Hoping to be able to get the guru to do it over the Christmas break but unable to get hold of him.
Give it a couple of days and let me know if the daily notification works. Please be sure there have been new posts in the subscribed threads before contacting me.
Cheers - Neil :U

Edit 11.03
Just checked notifications to daily and it was off . I remember setting that On weeks ago ??
Ill see what happens now.
Edit 11.07 In My subscriptions ,Subscriptions , Notifications are now ticked on . Below that some are ticked daily some ticked instant. They are all ticked though. all that was off.
Edit 11.37 PM Problem ?
In My subscriptions , subscriptions , I just went back to that page and checked since 11.07 PM, its all un ticked again !
There is no save changes option that I can see there either.
Edit 11.57 PM just went to General settings then to Default Thread Subscription Mode , then changed that fom Daily using email to instantly using email.
Thanks Neil.
yes there has been new posts in the threads.
No upgrades
No Blocking programs that I know of.
And no updates to spam filters that I know of .
I posted something on the Metal Work Forums recently and an email notification came through when a reply was posted.
Im still getting nothing from WW forums . Its been a while and Ive been lazy 1 , and the settings part of the forum is something I wander around in a bit lost sometimes . Getting a little better at it tonight though .
My guess is I may have accidentally pressed the "unsubscribe from all threads" option doing something on my phone while reading a forum email.
In settings, what do I look for to check that.
While checking my settings weeks ago I thought I ticked that on? Or turned it on somehow?
When I used the computer my emails come to, I had a blocking option with that email software. I dont use that computer now , much , so WWF emails were not blocked on that.
I haven't touched that computer for months.
And I don't know of any options for blocking emails that I open on my phone .
I can unsubscribe from some emails with that option , on my phone . But no blocking or bouncing that I know of there unfortunately.

Rob, in your Subscriptions, after you’ve ticked the boxes, you have to scroll down and click on “Selected Threads” select an action then click Go.
And in General Settings, once you’ve selected an action you have to scroll down and click on “Save Changes”
Hope this clears it up for you

Still no emails coming through from the forum.
As well as your reply here there was another later post on a thread , the 4x2 thread in General woodwork at 3.01.
All subscriptions are set at Instant . So I can see if one gets sent through asap.
All my other emails, ebay and business ones as well as the annoying ones keep coming as well as one from Metal work forums a week back.
Any other suggestions ?

I'm Back in!
I cant believe the hassle Ive been through to get back on forum .
locked out twice, not from viewing signed, on but from replying or posting new threads. Except on Market place . I was waiting for email verification emails from forum that never arrived.
My problem was my internet provider Optus . What a pain in the butt they have caused. Turns out forum email was being sent to the spam folder , as Neil said back in post 9.
Optus just stopped receiving forum emails . I un spammed forum emails and nothing came through to the inbox after that.
I opened a new email address with Gmail today with the expert help from 18yo daughter.
And it worked!
Sure did a lot of hours learning about Optus and Webmail and passwords and trying all sorts of stuff out without a soloution.
Now to see if subscribed thread emails start arriving at the new gmail acc.

Rather than start a new thread on the same subject I’ll add that I’m experiencing the same problem of not receiving email from subscribed threads. I’m first to admit that I sometimes overlook things but I’m pretty sure that the settings are right. I did turn them off while we were away and after resetting I haven’t received any since returning and I’ve checked junk/spam folders so any suggestions will be appreciated.

Haven't heard any more about this from Auscabs since his Feb post so guess it worked for him.
Seems a number of service providers have taken it upon themselves to pull what they reckon is spam from the recipients emails. Probably because they can recognize them as being auto-generated.
Put
[email protected] on your email trusted list and if that doesn't work ask you service provider to put it on theirs. Failing all else get a gmail or other account not associated with your current service provider.
If that doesn't work then ????
We do have a forum upgrade coming, been coming since December last year but haven't quite been able to get it done yet. Hopefully if and when we finally get it done it may fix this problem but I doubt it.
It's almost invariably at the users end (that's you) and not ours. If it wasn't we would be inundated with hundreds and hundreds of complaints instead of the odd one.
Hope this is of some help apple8.

I'd suggest that you DONT , what ever you do , change the email address the forum has for you while using the same server that may or may not be the problem. Test it by first swapping to a new email with a different server. Like Gmail or what ever.
I did that mistake to try and see if the forum would send a notification to a new email address,( same server ,Optus), to my home email rather than my work email. I was trying to find out what the problem was, Forum or Optus.
Once I changed it the forum wants a reply to an email verification it sends you to verify your new email address.
Optus was blocking forum emails, I didnt know this at the time. I couldn't unblock them and I wasn't getting the email for verification that was sent .
So I was Locked out and didn't know why , I didn't know if it was a forum malfunction or Optus. I was just locked out getting nothing .
Trying to get help by sending an email to
[email protected] didn't work as I assume they weren't getting them because of Optus. That was trying with both my Home and work email address's. The penny hadn't dropped that both may not be getting through.
It wasn't until I changed to a Gmail account and typed that into the forum box ( locked out but still had some access) for emails to be sent to me that a verification email finally came through to my new Gmail account.
I never solved the Optus problem . I don't think it could be solved . They have made changes that have a lot of angry online mail being sent around on the Optus forum about Optus deciding what mail you get and don't get.
My new Gmail is not as good at forum notifications as Optus was when it was working . I only use the Gmail for the forum . Its sending me updates on threads I don't want . And an email about a new post can arrive hours after a new post was placed . Its a Pain that I'm putting up with . Maybe playing with the settings will stop the updates thing ?
Rob .

Thanks, I gave this some thought overnight and changed the email address to a past provider that Is still active and see how that goes to eliminate the Apple servers from the equation. Strangely when I was waiting for the confirmation email, it showed one email in the box but nothing when opened then it showed two waiting, this time when opened it was there ??? I’ll see how it goes.

Changing the email address to another provider worked. As far as I can see I am unable to whitelist as the emails are not being received from the apple servers, this suggests to me that they are blocking either the domain name or the email IP address. This would then infer that others with an apple email address are blocked too from receiving notification which would have been raised before but maybe there is not that many. Anyway it's working for me now so I am happy to leave it at that.

Neil,
I don't receive all my subscribed threads. I wonder if this is because if a daily notification exceeds a certain number then my ISP (iinet) treats them as spam?
Is it possible to publish the number of daily posts for each sub-forum, so that we can examine this possibility?

Chris

placed a query with my ISP as follows:
" I am a member of a very large woodworking forum, which sends out daily updates to members subscribed to various sub-forums. I find that some of these daily updates often do not arrive, but the sender insists they were sent, and suggests that you are blocking them. My understanding is that if you regard something as spam, I will still receive it, but placed in the junk mail folder.
Can you tell me if this is correct, or are you blocking emails that I never see?
The sender is
[email protected]
Thank you"
I spoke to them and they insisted they are not blocking anything - here is their reply:
"Hello Chris,
Thank you for your call about your email query, however as requested, this is a confirmation to state that you are not blocked on your webmail on our end.

I am currently subscribed to 8 forums. All are set to report updates daily.
Those I do receive daily are:
Bandsaws
Wanted & wanted to buy
For sale on ebay etc
Those I do not receive are:
Timber Sales & milling equipment (last received 15 june)
Furniture, joinery, cabinetmaking ( last received 15 june)
Triton/GMC (last received 14 June)
Woodwork, Tools & machinery (last received 14 June)
Swap or Free (last received 21 feb)
My ISP is iinet and denies blocking anything.
I have just changed my email address to see if that makes a difference, but so far not - still with iinet though.

I did get the headers from the email that apple8 got, so I have some info, but haven't had a look to see if I think there's a reputation issue that are coming into play.... but Chrism3's experience seems to imply to me that there's something going wrong with only some of the messages being processed (eg a script not working consistently when it processes different parts of the staggered emailing)

Poundy,
faulty script processing is one possibility, but another is that the one's I am not receiving are the larger volume ones, and my ISP may be blocking them on suspicion of being spam. My system is set up to tag incoming Spam but still deliver it. But I never receive any tagged spam, so my ISP's email filtering may not be working the way it is supposed to - i surely can't be the only person in Aus who doesn't get spam!!?
I have tried to press them on this point but so far have received a blank wall response. This is the reason I asked Neil for a breakdown of relative volumes in my earlier post above.

I am no expert on spam, but most times an appropriate SPF setup and IP address records should allow filters to know this is legitimate (but bulk) email. So I'd not really expect two different emails coming via the same path to your mail server to be classified differently; but it certainly is possible.
Anyway, below are the headers for a mail recieved to a standard mail account at the Internode mail system. You can see that the IronPort interpretation was this was spam, but it was still then delivered to the mailbox. The one thing that I would consider worth looking at is whether this reverse IP setup is causing issues:
209.95.48.51.static.midphase.com (HELO www3.ubeaut.com.au)
I would change the HELO to be
static.midphase.com rather than ubeaut unless you can get the PTR record altered, as that seems to be a most often reverse DNS check that this would fail.
Below the latest one is a header from my Hotmail account, from the last message I recieved from the forum (14 June). There's a different IP address stamping in there,
49.181.174.40, that might have been previously running the scripts or the website? Anyway, not sure it leads to much more enlightenment, but including it here for Steven and team for reference.

Poundy,
I'll let an expert deal with that, and I appreciate your efforts. I should point out that it's only daily updates that don't reach me, all other conversations take place normally - if I post to a thread i receive thread messages.
Chris.

Emails are certainly being delivered to Gmail. Do you receive the instant subscription emails and any other forum related messages eg. from when i liked your message above?
Another possibility is the daily digest is broken. I few forum owners have reported issues with it, doesn't seem widespread tho. I'll need to look into this.
Something that might be helpful for us, from Gmail are you able to search for woodworkforums and let me know the approx date when you last received a message from WWF?

Hi Steven
Not sure if you were directing this at me but I’ve always received emails to subscribed threads and PMs. I don’t receive emails for thanks/likes as I’ve disabled that option, I use the notifications at the top of the page for those.
I have only today subscribed to the forums in Chrism3 post that he said he wasn’t receiving to test the system so that I could say yes they work or no I didn’t get them and say hey we need to look further.

Steven,
No, I've been keeping away from my subscribed forums. The only thing I have done (not yesterday or today) is look at my settings page to make sure that I am still subscribed. That page tells me if there has been activity that should result in a daily update the next day, but I haven't looked at any of the threads.
Chris
PS and its frustrating me that I have had to refrain from reading forums while this testing is going on!

Would logging out before reading reading threads ease your frustrations? I’m guessing read threads work off your username being logged in.

Following Poundy's lead, i went looking for a Hotmail account. Seems Hotmail has been taken over by Outlook.com, although existing Hotmail addresses are being maintained. So i signed up for an Outlook.com account, and changed my settings to use that account. The result? today I received two daily updates, for Bandsaws and Wanted to Buy, which were two that I have been receiving. But no sign of the other missing five that I listed in post 35.

I can't recall seeing posts in those sub-forums though, so that might just be because there was no update to give you?
Edit: as part of the "new posts" link on the forum, you get offered a "past 24 hours" search if there are no unread new items since your last look. The direct link is this one (https://www.woodworkforums.com/search.php?do=getdaily). Try that and see if there's any posts in the forums you are interested in to confirm if an email should have been sent to you for those...

No I haven’t received anything, still get emails for PMs.
I look at the forums everyday and I also mark the forums as read via Forum Action in the main header bar at least twice a day so that may impact on why I haven’t received and daily updates

That's right, you are only supposed to get updates for forums you haven't looked at.
I got one today, but it wasn't one of my 5 non-functioning ones.

Steven,
I have now tried 6 email addresses through 3 email providers, and am only receiving daily updates for 3 of my subscribed forums.
I can only reasonably conclude that for some reason the other 5 are not being sent. We don't know the extent of this problem, since few members reach this thread. But since at least some members are receiving theirs, my suspicion is that some part of the subscription service has broken down.
Is there any way of checking to see if my missing updates were in fact sent?

It remains the case that I have not received updates from the following subscribed threads:
Woodwork Tools & Machinery last received 14/6/2019
Swap or Free last received 21/2/2019
Triton/GMC last received 14/6/2019
Furniture, Joinery Cabinetmaking last received 15/6/2019
I do receive updates from 5 other subscribed threads.
No explanation has been forthcoming.

ok so the difference is that those are actually forums not threads. Perhaps the team can see if the logic or method of triggering those is different between a thread and a forum?
Chrism3
19th December 2019, 11:22 AM
I may have used incorrect terminology. The ones I do get regularly are
Bandsaws
Wanted & wanted to buy
For sale on ebay etc
Plus Member's transport but that is only infrequent because of few postings.
I get all threads when I post to them, plus PM's.
Chrism3
24th March 2020, 05:37 PM
I take it that after many months there is still no explanation as to why I receive daily updates for 5 or 6 sub-forums, but not for others that I am subscribed to?
See post 89 above.

Why don;t you just check those forum when you log in, problem solved, bigger things to worry about than your personal notifications at the moment
Chrism3
17th July 2020, 10:52 AM
Throughout the lengthy period that I have been missing daily updates (see earlier posts above) for most of my subscribed forums, I have been regularly receiving three. Now they appear to have stopped:
Wanted and Wanted to Buy - last date 3 July
For sale on ebay etc - last date 25 June
Bandsaws - last date 3 July.
Have there been any system changes that might have inadvertently caused this?
My ISP denies any blocking, and since iinet is a major supplier any blocking by them would presumably affect lots of members.
