OK, I'm originally from Brooklyn, New York. I've been to a dozen or so Broadway shows as a teen so I can relate to the joke.
A couple were approaching their 10th wedding anniversary. The husband ordered tickets to a Broadway show on their anniversary which was some 10 months away. Getting the tickets was difficult as the show was almost sold out for that date. The husband had to spend more than he wanted but he got good seats about the eighth row, center.
As their anniversary arrived the couple goes to the show and is seated. As the curtain rises and the show begins the seat next to the husband is unoccupied. As the show progresses, the husband is becoming more and more incensed about the empty seat. During intermission the husband leans across the empty seat and asks the woman sitting there if she knew why the seat was empty. "Oh, yes" she replied, "It was for my husband but he died." Knowing how long the husband had waited for tickets, he realized that death was a real possibility. The husband offered his condolences and asked, "Couldn't you have given your husband's ticket to one of his friends?" The woman replied, "That was my thought also but they are all at his funeral right now."
