Wife & I are taking a trip to Dubbo and having a weekend at the Western Plains Zoo. Any suggestions of places to stop in on the way from Bris - Dubbo ?

Are you camping folk or strictly hotels/motels?

Warrumbungle NP is just a bit further down the road from Siding Springs.
If like wines and have time Mudgee is not too far from Dubbo.
Otherwise stop at tourist info places at any of the towns you pass through. They usually have plenty of suggestions.

We went last weekend and got a few bonuses along the way.
Took the side trip to Siding Springs Observatory and did the normal look through the static display area beside the cafe but the staff told us that the dome with the big telescope was open that day for a look. We trudged up the hill then took the elevator to the viewing area where we could look at the telescope through the glass windows. After about a minute of reading the displays, a member of the staff popped in and said he had some free time.."Would you like a tour of the inner workings ?". We jumped at the chance and by that time there were 6 of us and we donned hard hats and were lead into the inner sanctum of the dome. Questions flowed and answered then we proceeded to all the rooms where the Astronomers worked and for the icing on the cake he took us out onto the outside walkway the goes around the dome......5 storeys up standing on the steel grating walkway and overlooking the Warrumbungle National Park. Scary & exciting at the same time. Spent 2 hours and had a great tour of the dome & telescope.

We seemed to have a lucky weekend.....spent 2 days at the Dubbo Western Plains Zoo and booked in for the bus that goes through the Lion's enclosure. There are 2 trips into the enclosure, the early morning one that includes watching them feed for $39 and a later one which does not have a feeding for $29, When I got the tickets for the feeding session, I was told that the lions were a bit off their food and not feeding properly so was only charged $29 each and told if they feed "It's a bonus". So after a couple of days of not feeding properly....They were hungry. We got to see the feeding for the lesser price. Another Bonus.
