View Full Version : FIXED Managing Attachments

Vann

Is there a problem with the forum tonight? Everytime I hit the "Manage Attachments" box (in order to attach photos) I get a notice saying I don't have permission.

"Vann, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation."

I can post normally, sans photos.

Cheers, Vann.

Do you guys still have the problem? I've been back twice and used "edit" to attempt to add the pictures, but still no luck. It's been 17 hours now....

Yes, same answer when I tried again this morning.

I am surprised that we have not had an answer and/or explanation for the problem.

Sorry folks been away for the last few days with Son and Granddaughter from Houston who I haven't seen for over 3 years.

I will get Steven to have a look at this problem which has been brought to my attention by Bushmiller. There doesn't appear to be a problem with anyones permissions so I'm at a loss.

Steven is away in Europe at the moment so it may take a little while to get it fixed.

It is basically me, DavidG and Christos moderating at the moment and hard to keep up with everything. If there is a problem please post then report the post and it should get seen and dealt with a lot quicker.

My apologies for any inconvenience caused hopefully we'll have a reasonably quick fix soon. It's around 10:54 there now so should get a quick response if he's available.

Cheers - Neil :C

I have just tried a number of test posts of pics using Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Opera and can't duplicate the problem uploading from either computer or from url's. So definitely at a major loss.

:dunno:

Theoretically if you can post one of those :aro-u: then you should be able to post a pic.

Cheers - Neil :CThanks Neil.

I looked at reporting the post, but the report post window states in no uncertain terms: "Note: This is ONLY to be used to report spam, advertising messages, and problematic (harassment, fighting, or rude) posts." and I noted that the "ONLY" is in capital letters, so I thought I'd better not.

I can even start new threads (I started this one). I (and some others) just don't appear to have permission to manage attachments.

Yep, me too.

I can start a new thread, but click on the "Manage Attachments" button to add a pic and get the dreaded "you are not permitted . . . "

I love computers . . . when they work!

I initially used the "report a post" facility and as Neil mentioned he could not see any reason why I could not post pix. However, I then became aware that Vann and the rest of you have had similar issues and pointed out that there was a common problem rather than one specific to me. Clearly, he is looking into it. It will be resolved.

My Firefox and Flash recently updated automagically. I had to give Flash permission again to be able to select images to post. Perhaps that is related to this problem?

439495 Well, that worked :).

However the "Manage Attachments" box still gives me the no permission message.

I guess I can carry on, using the "new" (to me) method of inserting photos.

I have just been able to post a new thread with photos using the "Insert Image" above the text block. I was not aware of that so have learned something and it was quite easy. :2tsup:I don't find it quite as easy as using the "Manage Attachments" box (possibly just a matter of getting used to it), but it does enable me to get on with posts - so that's good.

Where it does fall short however, is re-posting previously posted photos (which I do from time to time). The "Manage Attachments" function brings up all your previously posted photos, while the "Insert Image" function doesn't. I find it much easier to re-use an existing photo, than to go back searching through my photo library, re-cropping and re-converting the original image to jpg (my images are stored on my iMac and I edit them in iPhoto before exporting as jpg).

So I hope the problem with "Manage Attachments" is found and fixed - eventually (soon?).

Cheers, Vann.

I'm pretty sure it does but I have never used it. During the process previous images have appeared but I can't remember how it happens or when.

The insert image icon has been basically the only thing I have ever used for photos. It has been there since day one back in 2000 when we changed from the original BB to vBulletin. I have always found it much easier and better than any other method. Never liked the attachments thing especially since this version of vBulletin went live a few years ago as it was most likely part of the reason for the loss of thousands of pics. It also means you have to go to advanced screen for some attachment when posting.

So because I never use it I haven't had the problem others are having. I can now let Steven know wheat the narrowed down problem is and that might help things along for a swifter fix.

I tried the paperclip and got the same results as being reported.....
Well blow me down 'n' pickle me mother. Who knew?
Der..... Everyone except me.... Doh!

In the mean time I will look into it a bit further today and see if I can find anything on the vBulletin site that might also help sort this out.

Cheers - Neil

Is there a 'how to upload for dummies' instruction? I have been trying the 'new' method without luck. I just end up with a blue circle doing donuts. Maybe it's my computer? Possibly. Maybe it's me? Most likely

If you want to upload an image using the Icon

Click on the Icon

Select either from you computer or from an URL - Insert URL

Select computer and go to the folder the image is in and select that

Then go back to the original box and select upload files and the file will be uploaded

Sort of like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvGrHALQI1w

Thanks Chris, maybe there is a problem with my computer setup or something. I followed the youtube instructions which was slightly different to the way that I was trying but still no luck. After several minutes the selected file had not loaded :-(

Make sure after you have selected the files that you go back and click on the upload button.

Depending on your upload speed it can take a while, my normal upload is on ADSL and takes a minute or so for about 600kb which this image was.

Vann mentioned that the icon method does not show all the uploads you have done and he seems to be right but I know it used to. It also does not allow multiple files to be selected and then up loaded but I can't recall it ever did as it has always bugged me that it didn't.

The issue of the insert image button not being able to select and/or upload multiple images at once has been mentioned occasionally in other posts. It is something that comes and goes. For a long time on the laptop I am current using I was only able to select a single image to upload but it is now letting me select and upload multiple images. I am almost certain this is Flash or Java update compatibility thing.

barrysumpter is the last person I remember to comment on the issue and I have a vague memory he even made a question about it as his signature file for a while, but it could have been another member, http://www.woodworkforums.com/f9/help-finishing-2x4-treated-pine-bench-220131-post2074278#post2074278

Thanks for your patience Chris. Still no luck, the following is what is happening to me:
1. Click insert image icon
2. Select from computer
3. Click on select files
4. Double click on image file on PC, fie name appears in box, 4.4mb size with an x in the small box on the right
5. Click upload files
6. Blue line moves across file name and bottom of box
7. Box disappears
8. After waiting 8 minutes give up in frustration

Anything to do wit file size? Was never an issue with the other method.
Thanks again

I would say it must have something to do with it but I have never tried the other method and never uploaded a file that size because we were asked to keep the size as small as practical. If you are not on the NBN it would take forever to load a file that size, at least from my connection. I always resize large files in the old paint application in Windows but like all good things that can't be done in the new one or at least I can't find how to do it. I resize to 1500 pixels on the largest dimension and save as a JPEG as the one above was done.

Yeah right - I recently moved house and my cable connection at the old house ran at 125 MB all the time. Now I am on NBN and on a good day I get 85 MB.

On top of that I now have to pay$20 a month more for a notional speed of 100 MB which I never get anywhere near, but if I did not pay the extra for it I would only be getting 25 MB.

Same service provider, same plan. no speed boost charges when you are on cable but they do not miss you on the NBN.

Yay for the NBN - not.

Below file is 5.5mb done as per Houn's method... Took 10 seconds to load - Chrome, Windows 10 iiNet cable with slow wifi.
439557

Problem with slow loading will be at your end.
Never seen X in small box on right apart from the one you get in most boxes to close the box. Never seen Blue line moves across file name and bottom of box either.
What windows version are you using? What internet connection do you have? What browser are you using?

Below 6.3mb Took 16 second to load
439558

For anyone trying to loading from URL: If the load fails it will be because the check box left side of Retrieve remote file and reference locally has been checked. This box needs to be left empty for most url uploads.

Hope this is of some help.

Firstly, thanks to Chris and Ubeaut for your perseverance with me.
First Ubeaut's questions, I am running Windows 6.3 and using Internet Explorer. My connection is a Telstra mobile device. But I also tested hotspotting through my phone.
What have I found? Well using quick reply I cannot see the upload.... BUT.... when I click on go advanced there is the attachment and it attaches.
Why do they call me passion fingers when it comes to computers?

By the way, the 4.4mb attachment reduces to 212kb during the attachment process.

Sorry guys, this has been fixed now.

I made the mistake of doing to big changes at once;

1) updating server software
2) preparing for a move to HTTPS

It looks like a redirect rule I had in place for when we move the site to HTTPS was causing the script error. Sorry!

If you notice anything still not working correctly, please post here.
